Though I'm quite ignorant of the deeper history of the Blues tradition developed in the southern US, surely music such as this was a major root. If I overheard this music coming from a music club as I passed by, I'd think it was a local Blues group performing unless i paused to listen more closely. The rhythms & beat are very similar. As I live just off Frenchmen St. in New Orleans & daily walk past the music clubs lining Frenchmen, I often hear similar sounding music. I've always known that the Blues had African roots but this performance from Niger really struck home how close this connection is.
Thank you for offering such a wide variety of music. My preference is music of the baroque period as well as the modern period of western classical music (Bartok's works for piano in particular but also works ranging from Faure to Phillip Glass), but I also love music of eastern traditions, though I'm not as familiar with these. An old friend of mine from Teheran, an artist who immigrated here decades ago, sometimes plays classical Persian music in his cafe (he himself plays several instruments), & occasionally he has joined in impromptu performances with local musicians in playing popular pieces of jazz for friends... Wonderful! Great to be able to hear music from so many traditions!
