She grew up in Hyogo Prefecture and studied abroad in England for a year in high school, then moved to Tokyo to go to college and has lived there since. Her interest in music began very early in her life, and before she even began elementary school she participated in a neighborhood singing group. She later joined her middle school's choir, where she also learned to play piano. She is especially fond of jazz and is heavily influenced by it.
Frances Maya sings in English and Japanese. She was the vocalist for the band cuetracks from 2000-2004. She has also contributed lyrics and vocals to a number of video game soundtracks, including Final Fantasy XIII and its sequel, Final Fantasy XIII-2. Most recently, she released the song "moonlight" on the label ed sally bang records.
