Cirano
Francesco Guccini Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Venite pure avanti poeti sgangherati

L'arrivismo? All'amo non abbocco

Facciamola finita, venite tutti avanti
Nuovi protagonisti, politici rampanti
Venite portaborse, ruffiani e mezze calze

Non so quante ne ho amate, non so quante ne ho avute
Mi chiudo in casa e scrivo e scrivendo mi consolo

Venite gente vuota, facciamola finita

Tornate a casa nani, levatevi davanti

Cirano

Overall Meaning

The song "Cirano" by Francesco Guccini is a tirade against the superficiality and hypocrisy of contemporary society, particularly of the artistic and political elites. The song starts by addressing those "with short noses," a metaphor for people who lack imagination and the ability to dream, often associated with Cyrano de Bergerac, a character from a play by Edmond Rostand. Guccini goes on to criticize poets and singers who produce "weak" verses, politicians who crave power for its own sake and the media outlets that spread their lies. He accuses these individuals of being "ruffians," of betraying any true value, and of being slaves to capitalism. Guccini provides a stark critique of the collective stupidity and apathy of the general population, which he argues are easily manipulated and pacified.

However, despite his anger and cynicism, Guccini also expresses a longing for something else. The chorus of the song repeats "Io non perdono, non perdono e tocco" (I don't forgive, I don't forgive and I touch), but Guccini admits that this anger and desire for revenge is only temporary. He recognizes that he is flawed and that true happiness can only come through love, which he believes exists but is unavailable to him because of his physical appearance. He concludes the song with a hopeful message that there is a place where people do not suffer and where everything is fair and just, and expresses his love and desire for his imaginary ideal woman, Rossana.

Line by Line Meaning

Come forward with your short noses, you powdered gentlemen. I cannot bear you anymore. I will drive the pen deep into your pride, and kill you with my sword whenever I want.

Venite pure avanti poeti sgangherati
Come forward, you shabby poets, useless singers of unhappy days, clowns who live on weak verses, although you may have money and fame, yet you have no backbone. Enjoy your success, as long as it lasts, for the public is blindly obedient, and you have no fear. Go wherever you want to avoid paying taxes, smirking and acting ignorant like the best in the class. I'm just a poor cadet from Gascony. But I cannot stand people who don't dream. I don't fall for the facade of false ambition, and when it's time to pay, I don't forgive, I strike.

Io non perdono, non perdono e tocco
I never forgive, never forgive and strike.

Facciamola finita, venite tutti avanti
Let's finish this. Come forward, new protagonists, opportunistic politicians, porters, bootlickers, and shallow broadcasters of false programs who have turned populism into an art. Have the courage, free marketers, to show your true cards. Because there will always be someone to pay the price, in this blessed, absurd beautiful country. I don't care if I'm also wrong. I like to annoy people, I love to be hated. I've always played with cunning and bullies.

But when I'm alone, with this nose that always precedes me by at least half an hour, my anger fades away, and I remember with sorrow that it's almost forbidden for me to dream of love. I don't know how many I've loved, how many I've had. Either because of my fault or destiny, I've lost the women I loved. And when I feel the burden of loneliness, I close myself at home and write, finding solace in writing. But deep inside, I feel that true love exists. I love without sin; I love, but I'm sad. Rossana is beautiful, and we're so different. I can't even talk to her. I'll talk to her through verse.

Venite gente vuota, facciamola finita
Come, empty people, let's wrap it up. You priests trying to sell another life to everyone, if, as you say, there is a God in infinity, look deep into your hearts, you've already betrayed Him. And you materialists, with your fixation that God is dead, and people are alone in this abyss, searching for truth on the ground like pigs, you keep the acorns, leave me the wings. Go back home, dwarfs. My enormous rage requires giants. I never fall for dogma or prejudice, and when it's time to pay, I don't forgive, I strike.

I touch my enemies with my nose and my sword, but in this life, I can't find the way. I don't want to give in to being bad. You can save me, only you, and I'll write it for you. There must be a place on earth or in heaven where we won't suffer, and everything will be fair. Don't laugh, please, at my words. I'm just a shadow, and you, Rossana, the sun. But I know you're not laughing, sweet lady, and I'm not hiding under your house. Because now I feel it. I didn't suffer in vain. If you love me as I am, I'm yours forever, yours forever, yours forever. Cyrano.
