Duke of Earl
Gene Chandler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning

Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl

Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl

As I walk through this world
Nothing can stop the Duke of Earl
And-a you, you are my girl
And no one can hurt you, oh no

Yes-a, I, oh I'm gonna love you, oh oh
Come on let me hold you darlin'
'Cause I'm the Duke of Earl
So hey yea yea yeah

And when I hold you
You'll be my Duchess, Duchess of Earl
We'll walk through my dukedom
And a paradise we will share

Yes-a, I, oh I'm gonna love you, oh oh
Nothing can stop me now
'Cause I'm the Duke of Earl
So hey yeah yeah yeah

Well, I, oh I'm gonna love you, oh oh
Nothing can stop me now
'Cause I'm the Duke of Earl
So hey yeah yeah yeah

My dad had me repeat “duke of earl” while he sang the song in perfect harmony. For years I thought it was his own song. Rest in Power Dad.

It was 1961 and I was 10 years old riding with my dad in his 1958 Biscayne.  This song came on the radio just as we were passing the high school parking lot.  I looked over and saw two teenage boys wearing blue jeans and white t-shirts, they were standing next to a 1957 chevy with the words Duke of Earl painted on the side.  It was the coolest thing I had ever saw.  My dad passed in 2004 and when ever I hear this song in think of him.

The most encouraging heart felts comments come with the music that touches our hearts and memories. Thanks for sharing that. Music then, was my recluse and escape from a lot of dysfunction in my family, but gladly not loss of loved ones, so I feel for you. I guess out of our own pains we should learn compassion for others. I always hope so.
