If You Could Read My Mind
Gordon Lightfoot Lyrics

If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I am a ghost, you can't see

If I could read your mind, love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind the drugstore sells
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
But heroes often fail
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to take

I'd walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three way script
Enter number two, a movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now, love, let's be real

I never thought I could act this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back

If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
But stories always end
And if you read between the lines
You'll know that I'm just trying to understand
The feelings that you lack

I never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feeling's gone
And I just can't get it back

It’s actually a good place to be. Just heartbreaking. Clarity and a bit of compassion for someone whom you’ve hurt and who has hurt you.

Steven Landino

A lot of us relate.. unfortunately!!!!

Allen Nigrello

I had no musical direction as a kid. I was alone without anyone to really love me. I’d sit by the radio and Singh any song that would come on the radio. This was one song that I knew. I’m 56 yrs old black man and love all kinds of music. People are so weird, they try and make u feel weird cuz he is white and I am black- I’m a man and I’ll like whatever I want and I love some Gordon light foot

Right there with you, my brother. I have been a Gordon Lightfoot fan since I was a teen. I’m 63 now.

I couldn't agree with you more. Growing up, books and music were the only things that made me feel accepted in a way. And as I've grown up, I can't count how many times a music snob would bash me for listening to R&B when I was "supposedly a rock fan" or something along those lines. I don't discriminate at all...if it sounds good to my ears, I'm gonna listen, regardless of what genre the music falls under! This song here is timeless 🖤
