Friend of the Devil
Grateful Dead Lyrics

I lit up from Reno
I was trailed by twenty hounds
Didn't get to sleep that night
Till the morning came around

Set out running but I'll take my time
A friend of the Devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight
I just might get some sleep tonight

I ran into the Devil, babe
He loaned me twenty bills
I spent that night in Utah
In a cave up in the hills

I set out running but I take my time
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight
I just might get some sleep tonight

I ran down to the levee
But the Devil caught me there
He took my twenty dollar bill
And he vanished in the air

I set out running but I take my time
A friend of the Devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight
I just might get some sleep tonight

Got two reasons why I cry
Away each lonely night
The first one's named sweet Anne Marie
And she's my heart's delight
Second one is prison, baby
The sheriff's on my trail
And if he catches up with me
I'll spend my life in jail

Got a wife in Chino, babe
And one in Cherokee
First one says she's got my child
But it don't look like me

I set out running but I take my time
A friend of the Devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight
I just might get some sleep tonight

Got two reasons why I cry
Away each lonely night
The first one's named sweet Anne Marie
And she's my heart's delight
Second one is prison, baby
The sheriff's on my trail
And if he catches up with me
I'll spend my life in jail

Got a wife in Chino, babe
The one in Cherokee
The first one says she's got my child
But it don't look like me

I set out running but I took my time
A friend of the Devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight
I just might get some sleep tonight

My parents played this all the time when my mom was pregnant with me. She said it made me stop kicking. And now as a 20 year old I still always fall asleep to this perfect song ❤️

People always talk about how dead was meant to be listened to on acid, but it's sad that no one appreciates the music for what it is. I'm always sober (except maybe some weed) when I listen to this and it's still the best. This is music not some fucking acid trip and it's great no matter how fucked you are.

Acid just opens the mind a bit, makes it all fire off. It makes us realize how connected we are. Music is likewise a celebration of existence and a loving communication when at its best. The two, hand in hand, are a marvelous way to enjoy an afternoon. Hendrix, Floyd, Garcia-

Ya I get it it’s great either way I did get some secret meanings from their music on acid and I loved it and I’m grateful that I don’t live for ever

I truly appreciate your point. I enjoy the dead just as much sober as I do on psychedelics, and I will be the first to admit that psychedelics are certainly not for everyone. A trip can be very scary for certain people and definitely they should never try it. That being said, for those that do partake, you really cant explain it, it must be experienced, but the dead truly are the psychedelic GOATS. For me listening to the dead while on acid is like cuddling with your girlfriend by a nice fire, and even that falls way short of a description. They simply transport you to that special place where everything is beautiful and you dont have a care in the world.
