Samazeuilh began his career in law before turning his attention to music. Studying with Chausson, d'Indy, Bordes and later Paul Dukas at the Schola Cantorum, Samazeulih developed a style in line with early Ravel and Debussy. He would even claim that a theme from one of his own works, Naïades au soir, was adopted almost unchanged by Ravel for the theme of the Nymphs in Daphnis et Chloe. For the period, his music was essentially conservative. He joined the nationalist, anti-German Ligue Pour la Defense de la Musique Française (while the older Debussy and Ravel did not).
Samazeuilh's musical output was small, and consisted mainly of vocal and instrumental works. He was better known as a critic and translator. He prepared the French version of Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, wrote a study of Paul Dukas (1913) and Ernest Chausson (1941), and published a volume of his musical memoirs: Musiciens de mon temps: chroniques et souvenirs, (Paris, M.Daubin, [1947]).
