The pop-oriented songs of Elliott Smith were a contrast to the darker songs of Gust, while both Smith and Gust's songs touched on subjects such as anger, alienation, loneliness and despair.
The band broke up in the fall of 1996 after Smith's solo work began gaining popularity. Gust went on to play in the band No. 2. Coomes carried on as half of Quasi, as well as playing as a guest musician for Built to Spill and Sleater-Kinney. Lash currently keeps himself busy as a producer. He helped with the production of Death Cab for Cutie's first two studio albums (Something About Airplanes and We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes).

Plainclothes Man
Heatmiser Lyrics
You're everybody's second home
Always trying to get me alone
An easy way to lose it all
Always there when all else fails
Over by the west side rails
But I don't really need that now
I never really did anyhow
I only really needed alcohol
Something that'd treat me okay
And wouldn't say the things you'd say
Please turn out the light
I get a sick confusion headache
Trying to figure out who's right
Dreaming on the silver strand
Waking up to plainclothes man
You little bastard, little boy in blue
Someone's gonna get to you
And fuck up everything you do
He's so unhappy inside
He's serious with everyone
And he thinks he'll win you with his angry kiss
Acting like he has no needs
Wanting you to watch him bleed
Made for each other bet you pay me any mind
Just goes to show my continual decline
They say that I'll recover my love of her once in a while
But I don't know
I don't think so
There's something that I'll tell you now
Now that no one else is around
The sort of lesson that I learned from you
Not quite the way you planned
But I know you'll understand
Someone takes a photograph
A picture while their sweetheart laughs
A perfect moment in a flash of light
Counting back from three till one
That's exactly what you've done
And I'm so
Unsurprised
I remember, I remember why I dream in black and white
Goes to show my continual decline
They say that I'll recover
My love of her
Once in a while
But I don't know
I don't think so
I don't think so

I´m a young musician starting to write my own songs and and like to know the opinion of somebody about my style of writting...here a piece of it:
I dont really care about that
because of my self, i cant believe it
and i dont wanna talk
It´s a kind of shame and it can be hurtfull
as i dont know how to leave here
So im here looking for something,
and im just waiting when its over

I was afraid Heatmiser wouldn't be any good compared to Elliott's solo work. Glad to be wrong.
Sam Nicholson
Their earlier material was heavier post-hardcore Fugazi type stuff, this is from their last album which was a shift toward more pop-orientated songs, Elliott already had two solo albums under his belt at this stage.

A second great song-writer...; kind of like Uncle Tupelo

@batboy I could see how that might be taken wrong, lol. I think they meant "fuller" sound....it's easy to be distracted from all of the instruments Elliott used within one of his solo songs because it's easy to just focus on his voice, whereas with Heatmiser it was more apparent....
