The Humble, Understanding, Money-making, Uniquely New Individuals, or HumUni (hyoom-yoon-eye), would fit into the latter. This Brooklyn duo consists of emcees Mokgethi “Mega” Thinane and Ishmael “Ish” Islam. They formed in May 2008 during the process of completing a short film for their media class in high school.
Receiving their unique soundscape from producer and master engineer Shareef “Aztec” Islam, one half of the group Common Thred, HumUni grows in their ability to make pure and organic hip hop music, and more people are beginning to take notice. Most recently, they released an EP entitled Coming Attractions, and are currently working on a full-fledged mixtape project Group Think, which is set to release on Thanksgiving Day 2010. Their sound and chemistry is reminiscent of the synergy between groups such as Outkast, A Tribe Called Quest, and Blackstar. For emcees so young, songs such as “My Reasons”, and the socio-politically poignant “Young Sambo”, evidence a presence on record far beyond their years. In addition, their fresh and inventive sound serves as a testament that dope lyrics and dope beats will always be relevant.
HumUni’s mission reaches beyond Brooklyn, beyond New York City. At only age 18 (Ish) and 19 (Mega), this duo aims to reach the masses of the world with their music, speaking on life in all aspects as they continue to grow and mature as young men. If you still lingered on the concept of hip hop dying, or the quality of good music period, they are indeed a reason for hope.
