Many snake charmers are found in India, and in the 20th century the "art" of snake charming grew in popularity until the Indian government forbid people from owning serpents - snakes being holy in the Hindi religion. Snake charmers protested and the government has since eased off its ban - but various social groups are attempting to assimilate the children of traditional snake charmers into more secular Indian society through education and other training.
