Hide And Seek
Imogen Heap Lyrics

Where are we?
What the hell is going on?
The dust has only just begun to form
Crop circles in the carpet
Sinking, feeling
Spin me around again
And rub my eyes
This can't be happening
When busy streets
A mess with people
Would stop to hold their heads heavy

Hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines
All those years
They were here first
Oily marks appear on walls
Where pleasure moments hung before
The takeover
The sweeping insensitivity of this
Still life
Hide and seek
Trains and sewing machines

(You won't catch me around here)
Blood and tears
They were here first
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, that you only meant well
Well of course you did
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, that it's all for the best
Of course it is
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, that it's just what we need
You decided this
Mm, what'd you say?
Mm, what did she say?

Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cutouts
Speak no feeling, no, I don't believe you
You don't care a bit, you don't care a bit
Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cutouts
Speak no feeling, no, I don't believe you
You don't care a bit, you don't care a bit

(You don't care a bit)
Oh, no, you don't care a bit
Oh, no, you don't care a bit
Uh-uh, you don't care a bit
You don't care a bit
You don't care a bit

Hidden

"Dust has only just begun to fall." - The arguments only seemed to just end
"Crop circles in the carpet" - Furniture is missing leaving imprints of where they used to sit on the carpet.

"Oily marks appear on walls
Where pleasure moments hung before" - Pictures taken off of the walls, leaving behind the light spot where they used to be.

"Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut-outs" - Custody struggles, using the child stuck between divorcee parents to get at each other. Superficial and fake conversations and acts

There's so much art in this song.

Looked up the meaning of this song. Apparently it is about her parents divorce when she was 12.
"Crop circles in the carpet" refers to furniture being moved and taken during the split. "Oily marks appear on walls where pleasure moments hung before" are the pictures of family coming down off the walls.
So much fits into place in this context. What a deeply emotional and beautiful song.

stop making up things that you don't know, it is a great lyric but she stole it from other performers. Nothing in this is new

@Sarah Bergmann Likely the increasingly distant, impersonal ways that parents can communicate their own feelings of lack THROUGH the kid.. like an unwitting hostage, the child had no vote in the matter, still suffers tho

If they had stayed together we wouldn’t have this song and they would

Be more miserable. Maybe. Maybe not. But here we are with this gem. Just saying.

Im Tired16

Oh wow. I always assumed it was her moving out after a breakup or something. Still feel like this is the ultimate breakup song.

Man, 2:52-3:22 is both ahead of its time and timeless. What a composition.

@Michael Szafarski You're clearly not a music enthusiast

@Michael Szafarski She's also using all 5 octaves while doing this and not many singers are capable of using all 5 octaves. So yes, it's still very impressive.
