Closer To Fine
Indigo Girls Lyrics

I'm tryin' to tell you somethin' 'bout my life
Maybe give me insight between black and white
And the best thing you've ever done for me
Is to help me take my life less seriously
It's only life after all, yeah

Well darkness has a hunger that's insatiable
And lightness has a call that's hard to hear
I wrap my fear around me like a blanket
I sailed my ship of safety 'til I sank it
I'm crawling on your shores

And I went to the doctor, I went to the mountains
I looked to the children, I drank from the fountains
There's more than one answer to these questions
Pointing me in a crooked line
And the less I seek my source for some definitive
The closer I am to fine, yeah
The closer I am to fine, yeah

And I went to see the doctor of philosophy
With a poster of Rasputin and a beard down to his knee
He never did marry or see a B-Grade movie
He graded my performance, he said he could see through me
I spent four years prostrate to the higher mind
Got my paper and I was free

I went to the doctor, I went to the mountains
I looked to the children, I drank from the fountains
There's more than one answer to these questions
Pointing me in a crooked line
And the less I seek my source for some definitive
The closer I am to fine, yeah
The closer I am to fine, yeah

I stopped by the bar at three A.M.
To seek solace in a bottle, or possibly a friend
And I woke up with a headache like my head against a board
Twice as cloudy as I'd been the night before
And I went in seeking clarity

I went to the doctor, I went to the mountains
I looked to the children, I drank from the fountains
We go to the doctor, we go to the mountains
We look to the children, we drink from the fountain
Yeah, we go to the Bible, we go through the work out
We read up on revival, we stand up for the lookout
There's more than one answer to these questions
Pointing me in a crooked line
And the less I seek my source for some definitive
The closer I am to fine
The closer I am to fine
The closer I am to fine, yeah

One of my all time favourite lines: The best thing you've ever done for me
Is to help me take my life less seriously, it's only life after all. There's neverending comfort in those words.

hey deanie

@Mollie Edwards because much of the sadness, upset, worry, you will ever feel is over things you cannot control. It's a line that says "relax, you cannot control everything... Life is going to happen..."

Coriel

Title line catchy enough too. Lyrics amazing.

Mollie Edwards

Why does that bring you comfort? It’s only life ?

The single most thing you have, but you are happy to not care about it. As it’s only life... like a T shirt or a used car ?

I’m just trying to understand.

Mollie Edwards

@Steph Smith sadly she missed the point

Robert Diethrich

I've always loved that line about being "prostrate to the higher mind."

I will never forget sometime in the early 90s my grandmother came home and told me The Indigo girls came to her Senior Center in CT and did a small show for the community of old folks that day. She was so excited to tell me about it..... At the time, I thought "big deal".... Now 21 years after she has passed, hearing this song is bringing fond memories.... The point I wanted to make was that these girls were on the verge of Stardom at that point, however, made time to stop in to a community senior center and do a free show.... That right there says alot about the people they are.

Call Me a Cab

I'm not crying...you're crying

They were already big in early 90s! First big song/album was 87. I fell in love with them in the 80s! Amazing they went to your grandmas old age home!
