Hallelujah
Jeff Buckley Lyrics

Well I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to her kitchen chair
And she broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

But baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
You know, I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya

And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Hallelujah

Elijah, also spelled Elias or Elia, Hebrew Eliyyahu, (flourished 9th century bce), Hebrew prophet who ranks with Moses in saving the religion of Yahweh from being corrupted by the nature worship of Baal. Elijah's name means “Yahweh is my God” and is spelled Elias in some versions of the Bible.

This song is a warning to all nations of the world. A nation heard there was a secret chord that David played and it pleased the lord (but, now the nation realises) but, you don't really care for music do ya? Well it goes like this (well this is how I was told) the fourth the fifth a minor fall and a major lift ( basically saying the nation will have a minor fall then a major lift) the baffled king composing Hallelujah (The baffled king of the nation is already composing praise allah "praise" "jah" back in the day as he may believe what he is doing is good). Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof (another nation)
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair (Really the nation OVERTHREW you tied you down and changed you and from her lips she made you say praise be to allah) Baby, I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor (My nation has ben here before it's not what you say)
You know, I used to live alone before I knew you (I used to have a better life before I knew you, I know baal isn't real it's you playing both)
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And Love is not a victory march (this says it all, I've seen your flag and the love you are offering is not a victory march it's a COLD and broken say praise me) Well, there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me, do you? (There used to be a time when you let me know what's really happening in the world but now you never show me do ya?)
But remember, when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath, we drew was Hallelujah (But remember when my peoples were moving in your nation and every breath we drew was praise be to allah?) Maybe there's a God above
But, all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you (Maybe there is a higher power a god above but all I've ever learned from your love was how to do it to other nations before they do it to me)
And it's not a cry, that you hear at night (it's not nation pleading they're in pain)
It's not somebody, who's seen the light (it's not a nation that looks enlightened)
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah (it's just a COLD and BROKEN praise me, allah)

That's my interpretation of this song, it's a warning from someone who has been through it before and is telling you blatantly do not fall for it. Now if you believe there is a God who saves people from loving nature... Then take the indians for example... you are saying they were the Devil aka baal before the British aka praise be to God got there, It's just religious people vs non religious that's all that's happening and everyone is fooled and now all the tribes of the world have been forced into praising the peoples God who stole their land from them but, they are just praising another tribe of people who got power. Lets see if the people in the Amazon can hold out but, that isn't looking too good, they are burning their forest in front of our eyes while we "could be" interpreting a song completely wrong but, the song also says it's not a cry that you hear at night so is this just the way the world works then? Whoever gets power goes on this same course because it's been mapped out? I think it is or maybe the religious saw the world changing when people were starting to praise nature instead of ruling over it and wen't on a mission to save their world. Who are the people who are all doing all this, well we are all involved because we all ignore it and take part in it but it's obviously the people with the guns. Religious zealots living in the USA from all walks of life. Gansters paradise they call it.

I've been kicked hard by life. Lost my dad when I was nine. Got institutionalized in my teens by my mom because she didn't want to raise me anymore. Fought my way out of that hell into my first apartment when I was 18, against medical advice, and thrived. Got my social worker dismissed before my 20th birthday. Lost my first love when schizophrenia turned her into a shell of herself, as gone to me as if she'd died in my arms.

I did OK in my 20s. Knocked around a lot. Worked as a casino wiseguy, a freelance writer, cheap, dead-end jobs, got married at 27...

...but the demons were just setting me up for some even harder knocks. Got divorced at 32. Turns out I make a terrible husband because I'm too broken to be able to handle someone else. She left because I was 'emotionally unavailable' and I had absolutely nothing to counter the argument. Then the Great Recession happened and I ended up homeless.

Didn't matter. Fought my way off the street. I'd been through worse, honestly. Homelessness was playing with house money, but "house money" was what I was earning. You haven't learned what true appreciation is until you've been without your own toilet to take a dump in and you finally get that most basic of human privileges back.

Keeping the place, now that was a whole new set of challenges. Worked a job with a two-hour commute and garbage pay that made me seriously think that I was going to break. I was at a point where I'd rather be on the street than working that job...hell, death didn't even sound like a bad alternative.

And just when I came out of that—quit the job, went full-time freelance again—I had a heart attack. Before I went in for surgery, I finished an article I'd been working on because no way was I going to my grave having missed a deadline, said "if I don't come out of this, just remember to play The Ecstasy of Gold as you light the barge to send me to meet the gods"...and survived.

I was 38.

And somehow that last reprieve finally turned the corner. I'll be 45 next month. I'm working a fantastic job with great co-workers and a boss who used the word "ecstatic" at my last review.

And there are two songs that truly capture the feeling of how grateful I am to have been blessed with whatever weird survivor gene is in my DNA. One is "Leader of the Band" by Dan Fogelberg, a song that belongs to my father.

The other is this song.

You can only get so far on "my life's pretty bad but at least I'm not this guy"...but if I can claw my way through hell and back, I hope like hell it inspires someone else.

Hallelujah.

Speak of the Devil

@Carrie Ann LaVan very well said. I’m recovering too. And yea, it was never once a death wish. I was actually incredibly hyper vigilant about being as stone cold seriously careful as i could be. It was exactly what you said. An absolute nightmare of a life, impossible things were expected and tremendous suffering was a near constant no matter the work and smarts. The luck was just not there and it was just utilizing a tool to try to keep going. Keep going doing impossible things required. And never being able to feel what i felt nor even remotely act on them. Incessant punishment for good deeds. Etc. You eventually learn to self abuse in this backwards way, in an attempt to remain productive and positive in the face of hells that people couldn’t even imagine.

At some point every addict was not one. Every addict “would never”. Most addicts tried to be smart and careful. Many of the clichés are just not true. I was never once a thief, nor was anyone i was close to. To call it “fully functioning addict” would give people perhaps a clearer image, but it was more like a “doing everything you are supposed to do in life and doing it phenomenally but way too much horror happened too often so there’s a dark secret keeping that ship afloat where it would otherwise be dead”.

I’ve said it before and i will say it again because people need to hear it. I would be dead if it WEREN’T for opiates and so would many people. When you have nothing but tremendous suffering and what life requires of you is even more impossible shit, it’s really not even a choice. A bad life is like getting sick sometimes. It just happens to some people. And when you get sick, especially really really sick but you need to keep working or providing or keep on trudging what do you do? You do what you can. You take medicine.

There sure are folks out there who do the cliché. Sit around and waste their life toying with dangers for fleeting moments of pure ecstasy and are thieves and etc etc. But i assure you… that’s not always the case and not even typical. Absolutely everyone knows a “functioning” opiate addict whether or not they know that they do. It’s ubiquitous. The only reason you wouldn’t know is because you haven’t been down that dark road enough to have grown the eyes enough to even see it.

Addicts can be bad people. And addiction can mess with everybody. But it is actually not often that it takes phenomenal people and turns them to monsters.

It usually just takes people who have extraordinary pain and buries them even deeper behind a whole new veil of protection between their heart and mind and soul from the outside world which has treated it extremely haphazardly thus far.

Het verzet Snel

I ask my Christian visitors, "Do you remember your Gospel narrative, that when Christ was supposed to have been on the cross, he cried out with a loud voice:
"ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI? which is, being interpreted, My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?" (Mark 15:34).
The above is a translation from the Greek manuscripts "ACCORDING TO ST. MARK." Obviously his Hebrew has a Greek accent. Because, his so-called originals were written in Greek. But listen to Matthew, who is supposed to have written his Gospel originally in Hebrew, which was aimed at the Jews. St. Jerome, an early Christian father of the 4th and 5th centuries after Christ, testifies as follows:
"MATTHEW, WHO IS ALSO LEVI, AND WHO FROM A PUBLICAN CAME TO BE AN APOSTLE, FIRST OF ALL THE EVANGELISTS, COMPOSED A GOSPEL OF CHRIST IN JUDEA IN THE HEBREW LANGUAGE AND CHARACTERS, FOR THE BENEFIT OF THOSE OF THE CIRCUMCISION WHO HAD BELIEVED."
Naturally, Matthew's accent would be more Semitic (Hebrew and Arabic) than that of Mark. Matthew records the same scene as Mark 15:34, but note the variation of the dialect:
Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI? that is to say, My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me'? (Matthew 27:46).
Please memorize the words - "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani." (Eli - pronounced like L and I in English) Utter the words - ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI; ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI, to your Christian friends and neighbors and ask them whether these words - "Eli, Eli," sounds like "Jehovah, Jehovah!" to them? No! is the answer if they are not deaf. Ask further, whether "Eli, Eli," sounds like "Abba, Abba!" (meaning father, father! in Hebrew) to them! Again the reply will be "No!" if they are not deaf. Can't they see that the cry is to Allah? "Eli, Eli - Elah, Elah, Allah, Allah!" Let them hear these words from your lips and watch their reactions. No honest person can help agreeing with you.
ALLELUYA!
Now ask your Christian friend, if he had heard the word - "ALLELUYA." No Christian worth the name will fail to recognize it. Whenever the Christian goes into ecstasy, he exclaims - "Alleluya! Alleluya!", just as we Muslims might exclaim the Takbir - "Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!" Ask him, what is Alleluya? Take him to the Book of Revelation, the last book of the New Testament, Chapter 19; we are informed there that John the disciple of Jesus, saw a vision, in which, why hast thou forsaken me'?
ALLELUYA!

Let us repeat the above Tasbih (words of praise) as an Arab or a Jew: ALLE-LU-YA will be YA-ALLE-LU because, as explained above, YA is always at the beginning in both Arabic and Hebrew.
YA ALLE LU would be YA ALLA HU: Meaning, "OH ALLAH!" (You are the Only Being Who deserves worship and Praise) "OH ALLAH!" (You are the Only Being Who deserves worship and Praise).
Unbiased Christians will not fail to recognize Allah as none other than his - El, Eli, Alle, Elah, Alah, Allah. Call upon Him by any name, for His are the Most Beautiful names, as long as those names are not contaminated and as long as they do not conjure up in our minds the images of men or monkeys howsoever glorified they might have been

Listening to this at 3 am in the morning, crying and thinking about my life. How I wanna live it to the fullest and don’t wanna regret anything but at the same time, it’s so hard to just even exist. As an overthinker, life can be too much sometimes.
