The overall sound of Jesus and Christ was generally an open debate; some considered them as post-rock, others considered them experimental, and others yet considered them complete garbage.
The duo met while in high school and while they played live gigs, they remained a mostly "studio" band. The "studio," a bedroom, unsurprisingly managed to produce lo-fi sonorities to accompany the recordings that were done in a short period of time. The 2005 album, "Ronnie Rabbit's Magical Quest" was written and recorded in five days, and the 2006 album, "Whore Wars" was written and recorded in seven days.
Live shows by Jesus and Christ were often an engaging and humorous experience. The duo frequented the Milwaukee area, often playing at the Bremen Cafe as well as being invited to play at the Milwaukee area's 2006 Burning Man festival. Live shows generally involved only the duo performing on stage, typically playing some combination of acoustic guitar, mandolin, flute, harmonica, and kazoo. Live performances were often of radically reworked versions of songs recorded by the duo in addition to cover songs and "live-specific" songs written by the duo, like "The Creature From The Black Lagoon." These "live-specific" songs were songs that were only performed live and feature heavy lyrical improvisation that could be likened to situational improvisation comedy.
There is additional material by Jesus and Christ on some rare, hard-to-find CDs as well as material scattered about the internet that does not appear on either full length album. The duo also has at least an album's worth of material written that remains unrecorded. Whether or not this material will ever be recorded and surface is unknown.
At this point in time, Jesus and Christ are on indefinite hiatus.
