With musicals roots ranging from Classic Rock, Funk, and Soul to the heavy beat-laden sounds of early Hip Hop, JS is making their presence known all over the Southwest, and even more so in the their present hometown of Tucson, Arizona. The Jivin Scientists consist of two brothers from New Mexico and an assortment of their talented friends, respectively. James Owens (aka Runt) is the man behind the microphone as the voice of the group. Older brother Jason Owens (aka "Deeko") plays the role of the heart of the Jivin Scientists as the Turntablist and DJ. At a young age, Runt befriended Ryan Troncoso (aka "Phen"), who is now one of the JS producers, as well as, Eddie Herrick (aka "Chase Crusher"). With the support of their growing fan base, family, and friends, Runt, Deeko, Phen, and Chase Crusher are bringing the Jivin Scientists to a whole new level of hip-hop stardom. Their story started nearly ten years ago after Deeko graduated high school in Gallup, New Mexico. At the instant he was introduced to turntables, Deeko knew that he had found his calling as a DJ. With influences such as Wu-Tang, Lords of The Underground, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, and Gang Starr, his growing passion pushed him to own his first pair of Technics SL1200MKII, in addition to other production equipment. Soon after realizing that Runt had found his own knack on the mic, the Owens brothers and their friends started a mobile DJ service in Gallup, which eventually lead to hosting parties of their own. A brief stint at the University of New Mexico lead Deeko to DJ Abel of the Versatile DJs of Window Rock, Arizona. DJ Abel passed on his knowledge of the B-Boy culture, graffiti, and the art of the turntable, which only fueled the fire of Deekos new love. Around the same time, Deeko also met Chase Crusher, then a DJ and Producer out of Arizona, who shared the same fervor for record collecting and producing. In hopes of making a name for himself as a respected DJ in the Tucson hip hop scene, Deeko followed Chase Crusher to Arizona and within weeks, found himself rocking breaks for the Tucson Chapter of Furious Styles B-Boy Crew, as well as DJing for the Hip Hop group Red Dirt Specimenz. From there, Deeko began opening for Pharcyde, Fat Joe, and Fabulous. With a real love of B-Boy jams and a new understanding of hip hop, Deeko and Chase, with the help of Runt and Phen (then only high school seniors in New Mexico), finished their first full-length project, Good For Nuthing. They tapped into a sound unheard. The Jivin Scientists moniker had been born and they were an overnight success, which spread their name from Albuquerque to Tucson. With the achievement of the first CD under their belts, the Jivin Scientists continued to make quality hip hop with their sophomore album Paragraph the following year, which exhibited an even more mature group. Their newfound success and rising popularity amidst the selective hip hop scene in Arizona landed the Jivin Scientists on stage with the likes of renowned artists Atmosphere, J-Live & Wordworth, Cali Agents, Jean Grae, Brother Ali, and Murs of Living Legends. In 2004, JS made their first attempt at pressing a professional product and selling it to the public by taking it to the people at local clubs and other live performances. The Jivin Scientists third and most recent album, Average Joe, surprised the crew with its flourishing sales and is their most lucrative CD and vinyl to date. In 2005, the Jivin Scientists decided to take their show on the road and recently completed a successful 10-city Southwestern tour through Texas, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. Three noteworthy albums, extraordinary stage presence, and a hit tour. What s next for the Jivin Scientists? You can find Runt hosting the notorious Mic Fights, one of the largest MC battles in the Southwest, for his fourth year in a row or catch Deeko spinning at any one of the many clubs in the Southwest. Also, their upcoming project, their fourth full-length CD titled Monster, is set to drop after the first of the year. With a true love for the music and a belief that defines them as fans first and musicians second, there is no doubt that the Jivin Scientists are indisputably taking the science of music and jiving it.
