Balancing cleverly where soul, jazz, urban and pop meet, her unique and characteristic voice easily captures the hearts of listeners.
Daughter of two Scottish musicians, she emigrated at an early age to the Netherlands, where her mother had been contracted as a theatre composer. Growing up in the wings, as she did, Kean could not avoid catching the musical bug.
Melanie, Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon, Bonnie Raitt en Chaka Khan were important sources of inspiration. At 18, Jodie started her singing career. "My first work was with a big orchestra backing artists like Rob de Nijs, Boney M and Paul Young". She continues: "I stopped after a few years to give myself time to develop further as a singer. I started writing my own songs and performing them with a band, at the same time doing 80 gigs a year with cover band The Boston Tea Party. The following years saw Kean develop into a much requested studio musician and allround vocalist. No doubt the whole of the Netherlands has heard her voice at some point, just not under her own name. "I was learning the business. Now, I feel I'm ready for it".
Mad World was written by Jules Reivers en Roel Gommans, two producers Kean had been working with on a regular basis. "They played me the song because they thought it was right for me. I agreed and loved the song immediately. After that things started moving very quickly, and before I knew it, we were in Lisbon and Cascais shooting the video. The single is the first of a series of songs where Kean collaborates with Reivers and Gommans, working towards her debut album.
"If you think Mad World is theatrical, wait till you hear the second single. We've used strings and more quirky samples. The album will be eclectic, mixing musical styles, and reflecting how the three of us work together."
All the pieces of Kean's musical past are now falling into place. The band she played with for years is now backing her on stage, where their shared experience makes for a great performance. And the years of lending her considerable vocal skills to other peoples productions have resulted in a great deal of interest being shown in the talented singers debut album. Initial reactions to the catchy Mad World are wildly enthusiastic and Kean cant wait to start touring.
"All my life Ive been focused on music, so obviously I'm dying to share our songs with the world. I feel like now I know who I am and what I'm capable of. This is my voice and Mad World is just the beginning."
