Gill, the son of a minister, started singing at age five in a family gospel group called "Wings of Faith". His solo career began in 1983 when his childhood friend, singer Stacy Lattisaw convinced him to record a demo. The demo he recorded fell into the hands of the president of Atlantic Records, and his self-titled debut album was released shortly thereafter. Then, Johnny teamed up with Stacy for a duet album, which featured their first together, "Perfect Combination", a second album on Atlantic Records, Chemistry, yielded the song "Half Crazy,".
Gill's big break came in 1987, when he replaced Bobby Brown in New Edition, a 1980s pop group. With Gill as one of the lead singers, the group developed a more mature, adult sound, hitting the charts with songs such as "Can You Stand The Rain," "N.E. Heartbreak," and the Johnny Gill lead "Boys To Men". During a hiatus from New Edition, Johnny embarked on a solo career. The hits from his self entitled 1990 album include "My, My, My," "Rub You the Right Way," "Fairweather Friend" and "Wrap My Body Tight". On this album, Gill played guitar, bass, bongos, and drums in addition to performing his lead and background vocals.
In 1993, Gill released another solo project, Provocative, which included the songs "Quiet Time to Play," "A Cute, Sweet, Love Addiction," and a gospel song, "I Know Where I Stand." In 1996, Gill was reunited with his New Edition bandmates, including Brown, as they recorded Home Again together, an album noted for the singles "Hit Me Off" and "Still In Love". Gill also released Let's Get the Mood Right in 1996, which included the title song, "Love In an Elevator," and "Maybe." The following year, he collaborated with Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat to form the supergroup LSG (Levert/Sweat/Gill) which resulted in the multi platinum debut album, Levert-Sweat-Gill, and a follow-up album entitled LSG2.
Gill, the only member of New Edition who is not from Boston, was raised in Washington DC where he attended Kimball Elementary and Sousa Junior High. His career dictated that he complete his high school education through the services of a tutor. Johnny had planned to attend college and pursue a degree in electrical engineering, but his career came first.
His latest recording, "You For Me (The Wedding Song)" from the Madea's Family Reunion Soundtrack received strong reviews from music critics as well as the general public. As of 2006, he is still performing with the group as well as performing solo as part of the Body and Soul Tour, which includes fellow NE members Bell Biv DeVoe.
At the 2011 BET Awards, he announced that he will be releasing a new album, after a 16 year hiatus.

Mh, mh, mh
So good
My, my, my, my
You look so sweet
Listen
Put on your red dress
And slip on your high heels
And some of that sweet perfume
It sure smells good on you
Slide on your lipstick
And let all your hair down
'Cause, baby, when you get through
I'm going to show off you
Tonight will be a special night
No matter where we go
And I'm so proud to be with you
I just wanna let you know
You got me saying
My, my, my, my, my, my, my
You sure look good tonight
And you're so damn fine
I want to say
My, my, my, my, my, my, my (uh-huh, ha)
You sure look good tonight (tonight)
After all this time
Slip on your nightgown
Step in our bedroom
First I want to take sometime
I just want to look at you
Girl, you are so fine
I can't believe my eyes
And all that I want to do
I want to make love to you, oh
Tonight will be a special night
Of many more to come
And I'm so proud to be with you
So proud to share your love
My, my, my, my, my, my, my
You sure look good tonight (I want to say)
My, my, my, my, my
My, my, my, my, my, my, my
My, my
My, my, my, my, my, my, my (make love all night long)
You sure look good tonight (make love until the break of dawn)
Come on, come on
Sweet little thing, yes, you do
Yes, you do, do, do, do
You do
Do, do-do-do, do-do (yes, you do, yes, you do, yes, you do)
Yes, you do (do-do-do, do-do, do-do-do-do)
And I'm so proud to be with you
So proud to share your love
My, my, my, my, my, my, my
You sure look good tonight
I want to love you
I want to love you in every way, every way
My, my, my, my, my, my, my (let me, let me show you how sweet it's gonna be)
You sure look good tonight (I wanna show you things that you never)
You never, ever, ever seen before
Put your nightgown on
Let your hair hang low
Step in our room, I'm in the mood
To love you all night long
You got me saying
My, my, my, my, my, my, my
My, my, my, my, my
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
M-m-m-m-m-my, my, my, my, my
My, my, my, my, my, my, my (see all you got to do)
You sure look good tonight (all you got to do)
Say that you'll be mine, all mine, all mine, all mine, all mine
My, my, my, my, my, my, my (all mine, all mine, all mine)
You 'll be all mine tonight, baby)
You sure look good tonight
Let me, let me show you how sweet it's gonna be, oh
My, my, my, my, my, my, my (my, my, my, my, my, my)
You sure look good tonight (my, my, my, my, my, my)
(My, my, my, my)
My, my, my, my, my, my, my (my, my, my, my, my, my)
You sure look good tonight (my, my, my, my, my, my)
My, my, my, my, my, my, my
You sure look good tonight
My, my, my, my, my, my, my
The song "My My My" by Johnny Gill is a romantic love song that expresses the singer's deep affection for his lover. The song starts with the lyrics "Put on your red dress and slip on your high heels," indicating that the woman in question is getting ready for a night out with her man. The lyrics are sensual and reminiscent of classic R&B love songs which were popularized in the 80s and 90s. Gill's smooth vocal performance along with the backing harmonies creates a romantic ambiance that oozes sensuality.
The chorus of the song is filled with repetitions of "My, my, my," which connotes amazement and admiration for the beauty of his lover. The lyrics "you sure look good tonight, and you're so damn fine" reinforce Gill's interest in his partner's physical attractiveness. Even after all of the time that the two have spent together, the passion and desire that he feels for her have only grown stronger.
The final verse indicates that the couple is now alone and that the night is going to be special. The lyrics "make love all night long, 'til the dawn" highlights the intimacy that the couple shares, and the fact that they are going to spend the entire night making love. The song ends by re-emphasizing the chorus, and the repetition of "My, my, my" connotes that Gill is completely overwhelmed by the beauty and allure of his lover.
