I love d tone and melody of Duke and back up singers... could hardly understand what he saying tho! Sounds like robber talk chanted in minor cords!

This recording by Julian Whiterose was made in 1914 rather than in 1912.

Actually this song was recorded in 1914. First vocal calypso ever recorded. Instrument up front I believe is banjo/mandolin hybrid. With backing band. Next time calypsonians are recorded in Trinidad would be mid-30's. Taken from great album on Rounder with two other songs recorded 1912-1914.

Love Judah Sound System

Actually Lovey's String Band were a Trinidadian musical group. They are known primarily for having been the earliest known calypso group to have recorded. They originally formed in 1890s and continued performing until the early 1920s. The first song was recorded 1912 believe it or not this is a fact

Thanks for the info, Brian!

How did you find that out?

You know your stuff Brian, nicely done!

Andrew Murphy

Sounds like two instruments to me, a Cuatro and a GuitarĀ

Ryland Burhans

Sounds like a Venezuelan style cuatro banjo.
