The band released two more albums, Discouraged Ones (1998) and Tonight's Decision (1999), before settling into a stable quintet lineup for all of the 2000s. The band released four more albums with said lineup: Last Fair Deal Gone Down (2001), Viva Emptiness (2003), The Great Cold Distance (2006) and Night Is the New Day (2009), with the band slowly moving away from their metal sound while adding more progressive rock sounds to their work over time. While lineup changes started up again into the 2010s, Renkse and Nyström persisted, and the band continued on to release their ninth and tenth studio albums, Dead End Kings (2012) and The Fall of Hearts (2016). After touring in support of the album through 2017, the band entered a hiatus at the beginning of 2018. The band returned from their hiatus in February 2019, with their eleventh studio album, City Burials, released in April 2020 and twelfth studio album, Sky Void of Stars (2023).

My Twin
Katatonia Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning
The head is hung in shame
The neck, and then the chain
The head is hung in shame
I thought that you had grown
That you'd carry on
But now that I am gone
What else's been withdrawn
you used to be like my twin
And all its been
Was it all for nothing
Are you strong when you're with him
The one who's placed you above us all
I think our love
I'll let it pass
It feels like fire
But it won't last
what is this coming to
I am unwilling to go on
You have lost
No one has won
The lyrics of Katatonia's song "My Twin" convey a feeling of betrayal and loss. The opening lines, "The neck, and then the chain, the head is hung in shame" paint a picture of someone who is feeling defeated and guilty. The repetition of this line emphasizes the weight of the guilt that the person is carrying, and how it is hanging over them like a chain.
The next few lines seem to be directed at someone who the singer had trusted and relied on, but who has let them down. The lines "I thought that you had grown, that you'd carry on, but now that I am gone, what else's been withdrawn" suggest that the singer had hoped that this other person would mature and grow with them, but instead they have failed in some way, causing the singer to leave. The final lines of the first verse, "You used to be like my twin and all its been, was it all for nothing, are you strong when you're with him, the one who's placed you above us all," reveal the cause of the singer's pain; the person who has betrayed them is someone who was once incredibly close to them, someone who they once considered to be their twin.
The final verse, "I think our love, I'll let it pass, it feels like fire, but it won't last, what is this coming to, I am unwilling to go on, you have lost, no one has won," completes the picture of a relationship that has ended badly. The singer seems to realize that they need to move on from this hurtful situation, even though it feels like their love was all-consuming. The fact that the singer uses the phrase "it feels like fire, but it won't last" suggests that they recognize that their pain is temporary and will eventually fade away. The final lines of the song, "you have lost, no one has won," suggest that neither of the people in this relationship has come out on top.

You used to be my Twin.
Those must be some amazing experiences for you who have made them,
first fall in love with one you planned to share your whole life with
then actually share a part of your life with this person, being happy for some time
then waking up one morning on a fateful day when the changes take place
then experience the loss of the love of life and all the grief that comes within
I do admit I envy you a bit for those emotions of which I am sadly not capable off the least.

I was listening to this song when I was 20, never experiencing toxic relationship. Now I’ve had 3 of them. Thank you Katatonia

@Birbdad You are so right. I had a toxic relationship in 2016, and when it was finally over, I felt so free. All the constant noise in my head was finally gone. We still remained friends but when I decided to stay on opiates and benzodiazepines indefinitely, he stopped liking and understanding me, and ultimately the friendship ended in early 2022. Maybe for the better, I guess at one point all people except for the few lucky ones stop being compatible with each other - and this is in Europe where they don't hand these diagnoses out lightly.

@Woden, the One-eyed Hard to let go what you've been used to for years. And let's face it, there's good in every relationship, you hold onto that tiny bit until the bad becomes unbearable. Anyways, feels good when you're finally free.
John Connor
Wow Katatonia caused you to have 3 toxic relationships? epic

Lately I became so numb I am dating only for 3 months and leave before beautiful feelings fade. Now I only have good memories) I even quit smoking and drinking

@HomeValue Glass Damn that was a lot of time for a toxic relationship to last (dont mean to judge you or anything, just pointing that out)

I wonder why this band never made it big in the US, their sound is more accessible yet better written than most active/alternative rock and metal bands.
