Biography:
Katice is a women's vocal group from Ljubljana brought and kept together by our enthusiasm for a large diversity of Slovene folk songs as well as by a strong desire to seek for yet untrodden paths of combining old, simple and beautiful songs with new times and musical tastes. These songs are authentic folk songs coming from all regions of Slovenia, and we lay a particular stress on those coming from marginal parts of Slovene ethnical territory, namely Rezija, Bela Krajina, Istria and Prekmurje. It is especially in these regions that the folk songs, under the influence of the neighbouring countries, attained an extraordinary richness of expression. Katice are also interested in contemporary arrangements of folk songs so as to bring Slovene tradition closer to the present day situation. In the last fifteen years, our way of life has changed drastically, and so has the role of folk songs. This is why Katice find a challenge in unveiling new dimensions lying hidden in folk songs: thus our combining the old with the new, the traditional with the contemporary.
At the very beginning, our repertoire contained folk songs in their more or less authentic form. These songs were first to be recorded on a CD ("Katice", 1995) and can be found in various publications. The second CD ("Se dela greh ...se slisi smeh", 1998) already introduces our first arrangement, "Ma saua cenca". Since then, the number of arrangements has been constantly growing. The third and last CD ("Jungfraua", 2001) gives birth to but arrangements, and three compositions ("Jungfraua", "Gizdava" and "Istrijanka") have an instrumental and electronic musical background. In 2002 Katice were celebrating our tenth anniversary. We have had numerous concerts to our credit, all around Slovenia as well as abroad, and countless appearances at congresses, humanitarian festivals and cultural events.
