@John Parker, could you please enlighten us ignorant beings of those "guitars greatest strengths" which you seem to have get to know through monsieur Segovia. And which are - in your opinion - absent in mr. Yamashita's playing as I could see you suggest.

To be brutally honest Yamashita's playing is so much more virtuoso than Segovia's (while still put there in purpose of the task: Pictures) that it doesn't help you in the beginning. And on the other hand Yamashita's playing covers so many dimensions in sounds and techniques that you can't say there is not this or that, while there is almost everything. Put perhaps not in the way and proportions YOU would like it, though it's looks like it is quite easy on your part to attack mr. Yamashita demanding more this or that. But could you play this? Or could Segovia havd played this? I am not demanding it or even suggesting you or him should. I am just amazedof the phenomenon of attacking when someone like Yamashita is doing something amazing.

^^^^ Oh please, this is astounding guitar playing on every level.

John Parker

Hes no Segovia. Very one dimensional, flat playing. He never learned about the guitars greatest strength. Segovia did.

When the record of Yamashita's transcription and performance of Pictures at an Exhibition was released, the world of guitar playing was in shock. And all the great minds of guitar playing were convinced that the piece was stitched together and overdubbed in the studio, that it would be impossible to actually play live. Thus when Yamashita came to North America to give a concert with his Pictures at an Exhibition on the program, there was disbelief and all the who is who in the world of guitar playing came to Toronto to see for themselves what they couldn't believe was possible. They were in shock to see that Yamashita could actually play this live just the way it was on his recording.

You can read about how the experts experienced this shock in an article by a music journalist at the time here:

One of the most amazing music performance that I've ever seen. Too bad that the sound quality is so bad.

There are performances that motivate people
And then there is this one that crushes any motivation that’s left
