Knud Vad graduated from Sorø Academy from 1955 and was subsequently educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and with Anton Heiller in Vienna from 1960 to 1964. From 1964 to 2006 he was employed as organist at Sorø Klosterkirke and in 1969 established Sorø International Music Festival. In 1975, Vad began playing works by Johann Sebastian Bach, which henceforth became a tradition every five years. He released all of Bach's organ works on nine CDs. He conducted the Danish National Symphony Orchestra in all nine of Beethoven's symphonies and toured as an operetta conductor. Vad was a lecturer at the Lübeck School of Music from 1978 to 1995. He started the chorus Soranus in 1967 and was its conductor until his death.
Honors:
For his work for musical life in the Sorø area, he received the Egholt Prize in 1996. Knud Vad received the Queen's Medal of Merit at his 40th anniversary in Sorø Abbey Church, and became Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog upon his departure as organist. Vad received the Polish award Gloria Artis in silver in 2015 for Polish-Danish cultural cooperation.
