This marks the day that David Parke (Bass) and Jeff Pallotta (Drums) found Ryan Orenstein (guitar) to be the most qualified individual to join their still-untitled band.
The name of the band is a fact that David and Ryan lived with from day to day while attending Hollywood High School. The boys both lived the farthest from the school with Ryan living in the west San Fernando Valley and David living adjacent to LAX. Since they were bussed to the Performing Arts Magnet school, they were the first students on the bus in the morning – both at 5:50 am. As Ryan and Dave were thinking of names for their new band, they came up with something they were proud of – First On The Bus. This had a nice ring to it and they could make the acronym FOTB. This name stuck for a few days but one day, the bus was running abnormally late taking David home and all he could think about was that he was always the last one off the bus. It rang in David’s head all night and he pitched it to Ryan the next day – plus Last Off The Bus was more of a lonely sounding name. LOTB was born.
Dave, Jeff, and Ryan hooked up during lunch in whatever classroom or teacher would let them practice their one song – a NOFX cover – until David remembered the studio he had come across once while walking around Hollywood High – R+R practice studios. Since the studio was right across the street from school, they forked over $20 each per week to practice for 3 hours after school from Monday to Friday and storage of their equipment.
After Dave and Ryan graduated, they moved practices to Ryan’s bedroom and recorded a demo that would only be pressed about 20 times on cassettes that Jeff received in the mail from time to time in order to review new music by up and coming artists. These tapes never really left David’s bedroom after pressing but were listened to over and over again in order to figure out what worked and what didn’t and influenced lyric changes and arrangement/tempo changes.
They would end up returning to R+R Studios to track drums for their first legit demo. What was planned to take 2-3 weeks turned out to take 2.5 years and in that time, the boys learned a thing or two about recording music and took it upon themselves to demo ideas for a new record/demo that would showcase the band in the best possible light with amazing quality.
In June of 2005, the boys headed out to Love Juice studios in Riverside and spent 3 days tracking, mixing, and mastering their new record – “It’s Better Than Bad, It’s Good” which had solidified their sound and confidence as a band. Since then the boys have played a plethora of shows. Stay tuned to find out more about Last Off The Bus and their other projects.
