With a catalogue of songs in three languages and a live show that can charm even the most resilient crowd, members Heday and Valerie have mastered their instruments to deliver a one-of-a-kind brand of dueling piano-guitar revelry. Layla Lane combines exquisite arrangements and clever harmonies for a style that is equal parts 1960's pop, gypsy swing, and good old-fashioned rock n' roll. All in the context of catchy pop tunes that rarely clock in past three minutes, the resulting sound is both playfully nostalgic and uncommonly fresh.
After guitarist Heday left his native Japan to pursue his music education in the States, he honed his skills collaborating with such artists as Jim Keltner, Jerry Lee Lewis, and the Beatles' Ringo Starr. He joined forces with Los Angeles-born pianist Valerie Stern in early 2009. An accomplished classical musician, Valerie has performed with members of the L.A. Philharmonic and even doubled for actress Lindsay Lohan playing a Chopin Waltz in the film I Know Who Killed Me.
The evolution of this cross-cultural project has fostered relationships within the design, psychic, fashion, and pro-wrestling communities, proving that hard work and dedication have the power to unite people from all walks of life. Layla Lane first enjoyed critical acclaim when the song “No More” won 2nd prize in the IAC Music Pop Song Contest in 2009. A collaboration with director Ken Ochiai produced a music video for the song that has since garnered 8 awards in three different film festivals nationwide. Layla Lane continues to achieve industry recognition with a song featured in the Lionsgate summer blockbuster Killers starring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher.
Layla Lane's refreshing sound captured the attention of Coca-Cola Japan, and in 2010 the duo partnered with the brand on a year-long television ad campaign aimed at Japanese teenagers. The success of the commercials thus far has inspired their latest single, “Happy Lane,” a fast-paced testament to the virtues of imagination with lyrics in both English and Japanese.
The "Happy Lane" single and mini-album were released on the avex label in Fall 2010 and are currently available for purchase in Japan.
