In 2011, Cohen received one of the Prince of Asturias Awards for literature and the ninth Glenn Gould Prize.
Cohen pursued a career as a poet and novelist during the 1950s and early 1960s; he did not launch a music career until 1967, at the age of 33. His first album, Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967), was followed by three more albums of folk music: Songs from a Room (1969), Songs of Love and Hate (1971) and New Skin for the Old Ceremony (1974). His 1977 record Death of a Ladies' Man, co-written and produced by Phil Spector, was a move away from Cohen's previous minimalist sound. In 1979, Cohen returned with the more traditional Recent Songs, which blended his acoustic style with jazz, Oriental, and Mediterranean influences. Perhaps Cohen's most famous song, "Hallelujah", was first released on his studio album Various Positions in 1984. I'm Your Man in 1988 marked Cohen's turn to synthesized productions and remains his most popular album. In 1992, Cohen released its follow-up, The Future, which had dark lyrics and references to political and social unrest.
Cohen returned to music in 2001 with the release of Ten New Songs, which was a major hit in Canada and Europe. His 11th album, Dear Heather, followed in 2004. Following a successful string of tours between 2008 and 2013, Cohen released three albums in the final four years of his life: Old Ideas (2012), Popular Problems (2014) and You Want It Darker (2016), the last of which was released three weeks before his death.
Leonard Cohen was born into a middle-class Jewish family in Westmount, Quebec, on September 21, 1934. His Lithuanian mother, Marsha Klonitsky ("Masha"; 1905–1978), was the daughter of a Talmudic writer, Rabbi Solomon Klonitsky-Kline, and emigrated to Canada in 1927. His paternal grandfather, whose family had moved from Poland to Canada, was Lyon Cohen, the founding president of the Canadian Jewish Congress. His father, Nathan Bernard Cohen (1891–1943), who owned a substantial clothing store, died when Cohen was nine years old. The family observed Orthodox Judaism, and belonged to Congregation Shaar Hashomayim, to which Cohen retained connections for the rest of his life. On the topic of being a Kohen, Cohen told Richard Goldstein in 1967, "I had a very Messianic childhood. I was told I was a descendant of Aaron, the high priest."
Cohen attended Roslyn Elementary School and completed grades seven through nine at Herzliah High School, where his literary mentor Irving Layton taught, then transferred in 1948 to Westmount High School, where he studied music and poetry. He became especially interested in the poetry of Federico García Lorca. Cohen involved himself actively beyond Westmount's curriculum, in photography, on the yearbook staff, as a cheerleader, in the arts and current events clubs, and even served in the position of president of the Students' Council while "heavily involved in the school's theater program". During that time, Cohen taught himself to play the acoustic guitar, and formed a country–folk group that he called the Buckskin Boys. After a young Spanish guitar player taught him "a few chords and some flamenco", Cohen switched to a classical guitar. He has attributed his love of music to his mother, who sang songs around the house: "I know that those changes, those melodies, touched me very much. She would sing with us when I took my guitar to a restaurant with some friends; my mother would come, and we'd often sing all night.
Cohen frequented Saint Laurent Boulevard for fun and ate at such places as the Main Deli Steak House. According to journalist David Sax, Cohen and one of his cousins would go to the Main Deli to "watch the gangsters, pimps, and wrestlers dance around the night". Cohen enjoyed the formerly raucous bars of Old Montreal as well as Saint Joseph's Oratory, which had the restaurant nearest to Westmount, for him and his friend Mort Rosengarten to share coffee and cigarettes. When Cohen left Westmount, he purchased a place on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, in the previously working-class neighbourhood of Little Portugal. He would read his poetry at assorted nearby clubs. In that period and that place, Cohen wrote the lyrics to some of his most famous songs.

Leonard Cohen Lyrics
Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by, you can spend the night beside her
And you know that she's half-crazy but that's why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her that you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer that you've always been her lover
And you want to travel with her, and you want to travel blind
And then you know that she will trust you
For you've touched her perfect body with your mind
And Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching from his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain only drowning men could see him
He said all men will be sailors then until the sea shall free them
But he himself was broken, long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human, he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him, and you want to travel blind
And then you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind
Now, Suzanne takes your hand and she leads you to the river
She's wearing rags and feathers from Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey on our lady of the harbor
And she shows you where to look among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed, there are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love and they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her, and you want to travel blind
And then you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind

@PARANORMAL RESEARCH DEADMANWALKING Good morning, PRD, I am not sure if you understood what I wrote previously. See my reply re: ancient writings. There are many.
Thank you for your kind offer of sending an audio book, but I must decline. I prefer to read words because sounds, and especially sentences and paragraphs when constructed to do so, can have hypnotic and ill intent. I have my words and do not use my voice for ill.
You seem in turmoil; surrounded by paranormal, every day you say. I suggest that you should broaden your horizons. If you cannot control your environment, then you are "dabbling" in things that you cannot control because they are beyond your capabilities, or you like it, or you profit from it (money).
And of course, what we cannot control is the way that these social media sites are used for other purposes, the most disturbing to me are mind control and trafficking. Unlike your name, I am who I say I am. You have chosen a fake name because you don't want to reveal yourself; you say because it was good for hip-hop - money.
I've used fake names and I've allowed my romantic self to deep dive into this stream while my analytical self took note of all. Now I come to the table as me, both the romantic who wants to help, and the analytical who doesn't play this game. You come to the table not as who you are known as among the names of record not found here. Be yourself and be proud that you have the opportunity to do so.
Many of our young people are being manipulated online. As I said above, I have sat at that table as an adult to see what and how the dishes were served and to see what I could draw out of this cesspool. I am now writing my memoires and am not surprised to see what I see here.
There is an immense amount of trafficking on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. There always has been and putting I-10 near the coast as an east west corridor only made it easier. Moving goods, services, and people - and children - around is much easier when you go online and create a fake name and communicate with your co-conspirators. Even in large cities, "black" market is much easier when you can be someone else. Such as, I'm at the X (see church symbolism in yourself, nearby landmark) and will be there a few days (see every day) and I'm busy as a reply to someone attempting make a time, "BUSY" being your reply to another post where a time is mentioned, by place in song like "at 5:11", age when something happened, "when I was 10", etc.
There is fact and there is speculation. There is rock solid evidence and there is circumstantial evidence. And of course, there is the fact that cognitive bias must be considered at all times.
I am putting my Story in Songs, with interludes and appendices, on my channel. The Story in Songs begins on December 13, 2014, when the romantic me entered this online structure. (12/13/14). There you will find the music, the movies, the comics, and the story of this fake abyss. And I am putting my memoires to paper which begin at my beginning and have much more detail. And as you can see, I have my words.
And last, may perpetual light shine upon you in this fake abyss and your true soul rest in peace.
C Hope

The lyrics are amazing. However, even more deep when you use the word that Cohen did "sank", not "sung". Totally different.

I was named after this song ...my Dad listened to it every day the year before I was born and then the night I was born...I listen to it when I'm missing him.

@Christopher Holst ...thank you for your beautiful response.

You look as though this song might have been written for you. A lovey thing, this weaving of the fabric still linking you with your Dad.

That is very sweet.

@John Stockburn Hey, I'm easy to find, I'm always just me these days. I have no friends on facebook, blocked the ones I had and don't accept friend requests. Also, nothing personal, but I don't chat privately either, after all, that's what the story in songs is all about and how I put my sociolinguistic class to good use.
I did just post something there about one of those fruits on the tree of life. It's one of those unripened and yet kinda rotten fruits that life gives us that popped up as a memory today. hahaaha
I'll find your comments, or you remember this one and comment and I'll respond. Chat with you later. By the way, have you checked out the AI art channel. It's fascinating.
