Stop All The Clocks by W.H. Auden. Mahler
Lindsay Duncan Lyrics

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,

Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,

Silence the pianos and with muffled drum

Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead

Scribbling on the sky the message “He is Dead”.

Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,

Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,

My working week and my Sunday rest,

My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;

I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,

Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,

Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;

For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Stunningly beautiful but so sad at the same time. Thank you so much for posting this. It made me think of just how much I love my wife, and just how transient is our time with our loved ones in this life.

I'm still in the throes of this marvelous reading.

So awfully, awfully sad, but a wonderful poem well read. Thank you for posting this.

That is a great reading. I just listened to the four weddings version. Pointless choosing. Both are superb readings.

Very good, best version I have heard so far on YouTube. So many recite this in a bland and monotone voice, not this version though by Lindsay Duncan. I shall keep looking for my ultimate version, wish Jeremy Irons had done this poem, now that would really be something.

I do like the version by Des Lynam👍👍

Okay...I'm literally 11 mins into the movie and it is clear as day that the mother did this intentionally. Interesting how the mom talked about fighting with dad at the very beginning of the movie. Could have been about raising a child? Poor baby, your mother is a dipshit for leaving you in the car for 6-hours causing your death. Oh, tears on this sociopath either!!
