Born David Debrandon Brown, Lucky Daye is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana. Raised in a cult that forbade secular music, he nonetheless discovered an innate knack for singing. After his mother left the cult, Brown immersed himself in classic R&B and eventually fell particularly hard for the likes of Stevie Wonder and Rick James. Uprooted by Hurricane Katrina, he moved to Tyler, Texas, but soon relocated to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue music. He established himself as a songwriter and background vocalist, and across 2008 and 2009, landed credits on material by Keith Sweat (a handful of cuts on Just Me) and Ne-Yo ("She Got Her Own"). Brown wasn't as active the next few years — he did write for Boyz II Men ("Believe Us") — though he shifted gear during the latter half of the 2010s. During 2016 and 2017, he co-wrote songs released by Keke Palmer ("Enemiez"), Ella Mai ("10,000 Hours," "Down"), Trey Songz ("Song Goes Off"), and Mary J. Blige (including two tracks off Strength of a Woman), among other contemporary R&B artists. Signed as a recording artist to the RCA-supported Keep Cool label, Brown — by then living in Los Angeles — made his debut as Lucky Daye in 2018. First was "Little More Time," a Victoria Monet collaboration included on the soundtrack for Insecure's third season. Next came the single "Roll Some Mo," followed shortly thereafter by I, the song's parent EP. These six cuts, all written with and produced by D'Mile, prompted comparisons to Frank Ocean but also fell somewhere between comparatively soul-rooted progressives BJ the Chicago Kid and Daniel Caesar. ~ Andy Kellman

La-la-la-la-la, la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Every time we link up, it's only us there
We're thinkin', will we get there?
Is it wrong, is it right?
You know that I miss you
But I be gettin' mixed signals
Why you slow down?
Don't stop this green light
Now you callin' me special
When you know I can't have you
When I'm on to the next one
Oh, now you wan' get aggressive
Oh, fuck do you mean?
You keep on makin' believe
Nightmares turned into a dream
If you're so toxic to me, what am I fiendin'?
'Cause I thought it was over
Got me thinkin' my feelings over
You keep doin' it over and over
You keep callin' me back
I'm just tryna get closure
But you pullin' me closer and closer
Phone ringin' like over and over
'Cause you keep callin' me back
La-la-la-la-la, la-la
Why you keep callin' me back?
Back
(Over, and over, and over)
Love me, then you switch up
I'd rather we never pick up
But can we slip up and mix up sometimes?
You say it don't mean it
Just want it when it's convenient
Am I crazy for waitin'? I might slide
Now you callin' me special
When you know I can't have you
When I'm on to the next one
Oh, now you wan' get aggressive
Oh, fuck do you mean?
You keep on makin' believe
Nightmares turned into a dream
If you're so toxic to me, what am I fiendin'?
'Cause I thought it was over
Got me thinkin' my feelings over
You keep doin' it over and over
You keep callin' me back
I'm just tryna get closure
But you pullin' me closer and closer
Phone ringin' like over and over
'Cause you keep callin' me back
La-la-la-la-la, la-la
Why you keep callin' me back?
Back
(Over, and over, and over)
Now you walkin' on a thin line
We been through it like ten times
I'ma put you in line
Yeah, I had you on an incline
Now I don't even want to reply
I'ma have to decline
Yeah, you show me I don't want to rewind
Yeah, know you a ten, but that attitude ain't fine
(You a ten, but that attitude ain't fine)
In Lucky Daye's song "Over," he reflects on a tumultuous romantic relationship with a partner who continually sends mixed signals. The song is primarily about the push and pull of trying to move on from someone who keeps coming back into your life. The opening lines of the song are a repetitive melody that convey a sense of frustration and confusion in trying to understand some of the nuances of the relationship. Daye explains that every time they meet, it's just the two of them, and they both wonder if they should move forward or not. While Daye admits to missing his partner, he seems to be perplexed by her mixed signals, asking her not to slow down and not to stop the green light.
The song's chorus conveys the singer's feeling of being stuck in a cycle with his partner. He believed that the relationship was over, but she keeps calling him back, making it hard for him to get closure. Daye sees the relationship as toxic, but he can't seem to stop himself from wanting to hold on to it. Despite trying to move on to the next one, his ex continues to call him back.
In the second verse, Daye expresses his disappointment with his partner's inconsistent behavior. She loves him one moment and switches up the next, and while Daye wants to move on, he admits that sometimes he doesn't mind slipping up and mixing up with her. Daye recognizes that his partner's actions are not genuine and only occur when it's convenient for her. Despite being aware of this, Daye finds himself continuously drawn to her.
Overall, "Over" is a song about the complexities of relationships, the struggles of moving on from someone you still care for, and the effects of being in a toxic relationship. The song conveys Daye's emotional turmoil, dealing with a partner who continually sends mixed signals and keeps calling him back. He recognizes that the relationship is harmful, but he finds it hard to let go.
