Between 2002 and 2011, the Romanian population has shrinked by 1.5 million persons. Most of this decrease is due to the constant outpouring of Romanians who wish to benefit from a higher standard of living in "The West". Luna Amară represents a generation of young Romanians who want to stay and make Romania a better place to live in.
The music genre adopted by the band is alternative rock with some influences from grunge, punk, ska and hardcore. Luna amară was also the first band to introduce a trumpet in the romanian alternative rock landscape.
Luna amară was formed in Cluj-Napoca in September 1999 by five students. Initially the band was called Tanagra Noise, having their debut stage appearance was at a Freshman's Ball on December 12 that same year. Later, they decided to change their name to the current one because the current one was harder to remember and because the band started to compose more and more songs in Romanian.
Starting from 2002, Luna Amară starts getting noticed by the critics and the mass media from Romania, with songs such as Gri Dorian (Dorian grey), Roșu Aprins (Bright Red), Folclor (Folklore), Mara, Ego nr. 4 and Oraș (City) are some of the songs which reached the top of the local radios across Romania.
Luna Amară performed live on the same stage with legendary bands and artists such as Faith No More, Clawfinger, Incubus, Paradise Lost, Exploited, Apocalyptica, HIM, Amorphis, Klimt 1918, Toy Dolls. In 2010, Luna Amară was among the bands invited to sing during the Tuborg Green Fest/Sonisphere event, on the 27th of june. Other bands having live performances at the same event were Anathema, Stone Sour, Alice In Chains and Rammstein. On the 2nd of october, the same year, Luna Amară performed in the opening of the Ozzy Osbourne concert in Bucharest. Later on, Luna Amară opened the stage for Deftones in 2011.
Outside Romania, Luna amară was invited to the Sziget Festival in Budapest both in 2005 and 2007, and to Peninsula in 2011, on the same day as Iggy Pop.
The band members have been invited to interviews on all the Romanian TV stations and have been presented in major Romanian music and cultural publications, such as Bravo, Popcorn, Music Event, Art&Roll, Musical Report.
During the years, Luna amară did not remain just a simply alternative band; as they declared in an interview for Ziare.com, the messages they seek to promote are honesty, civic involvement, the courage to speak out what you think, love, the dangers of social autism, the importance of friendship and human solidarity, personal frustration, the real dialogue among persons, the political lies, traps from our personal lives, [as well as] the soul fulfillment. These themes in the band's songs have also caused some dificulties, in part because of their aim.
In 2004 Luna amară was not paid after the performance in Alba-Iulia on 1st of december (the National Day) because of the song called Folclor (Folklore). The lyrics of the song were rather a manifest to revolt against the corrupt political leadership bringing the country in poverty and weakening the state altogether. Because of the same song, the band was banned from a concert in Cluj-Napoca, their native city.
In 2012, the band vocalist Mihnea Blidariu was briefely held up and threatened to get fined by the Romanian Gendarmerie because he dedicated the song Albastru (Blue) "to the lads with shields and batons that had beaten up the innocent in Piața Universității, in January and February 2012". He also added to the public "if you want, you can raise the middle finger to the Bucharest Gendarmerie".
The cause the band members were involved the most was the one against opening a mining exploatation at Roșia Montană, where the members of Luna amară also performed live at every edition of Fân Fest, being also personally involved in the protests.
The latest album to-date is called Nord (North), and was launched in 2018.
