They have been playing together since the mid 90’s when they were both members of Eliza Carthy's Kings of Calicutt. They both went on to perform with Mercury Prize nominees Waterson:Carthy; Rose eventually joining the band. The duo were finalists in BBC Radio 2’s Young Tradition Award and between them have numerous acclaimed recordings from across the folk genres.
Having gone down a storm at Glastonbury Festival 2008 they are pleased to welcome simoncaremusic on board as their agent & are looking forward to touring the album during 2009.
Colston is the prodigy of Hammered Dulcimer player Jim Couza & has played a pivotal role raising the profile of the Dulcimer during the past 20 years. Half of the virtuosic duo Cythara who performed on the soundtrack for David Attenborough’s ‘Private Life of Plants’, Colston was also a member of folk rock outfit Pressgang before joining Rose in the Kings of Calicutt.
Colston has been a member of Jennifer Crook’s band & continues to push his instrument into new territory, having joined alternative pop act Tina Mali. Also appearing with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, performing the Oscar wining soundtrack from The Lord of the Rings.
Rose's love of traditional music was born out of playing & dancing for his local Morris side in Watford, where he quickly developed into one of the finest Melodeon players in the country. “Discovered” by Eliza Carthy he is now best known for his work with the Kings of Calicutt, Waterson:Carthy and most recently Faustus, who have been nominated for ‘Best Group’ in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
Rose has become a ubiquitous force on the folk circuit having played with such bands as Edward II, Ticked Pink, Eliza Carthy Band and Bellowhead to name but a few, and is still at the forefront of traditional dance with his headlining Ceilidh bands Random and Whapweasle.
The duo released their debut album ‘Sand & Soil’ on April 6th 2009.
With an infectious enthusiasm these two great friends throw themselves into the stories of sea & land that define this album. With an eye on the past and an ear for the now, Mac & Saul exude a sense of fun and adventure throughout, making this album compelling and addictive listening. Their awesome technical ability sparkles with an irresistible energy, while their soulful treatment of the more introspective numbers keeps everything perfectly balanced.
Cracking vocal harmonies, solid arrangements & powerful performances make this album a tour de force, as Mac & Saul positively revel in the music & the rapport they enjoy as a duo. Guesting Maclaine’s father Mark Colgan, Teph Kay and Jennifer Crook.
“The current most outstanding younger player is laid-back Maclaine Colston, taught by Jim Couza.”
~ The Living Tradition 2008
“Saul Rose – probably the best Melodeon player in the country.”
