Magga, a classically trained violinist, first appeared in the music world as the front woman and lead vocalist of Icelandic punk band Risaeðlan, or Reptile. They released one album in 1990, Fame and Fossils, and dissolved after the departure of co-singer Dora Wonder. In 1996, Risaeðlan compilation CD Efta! was issued by Smekkleysa, and featured all of the band's work post-F&F and various early demos.
In the time between Risaeðlan and her first solo album, Magga contributed vocals to her cousin Sölvi Blöndal's band Quarashi's first EP, Switchstance. Magga can be heard on the songs Lone Ranger and Beam Me Up, although her contribution was removed on the LP version of Beam Me Up.
In 1998, Magga teamed up with Graham Massey of 808 State and created her experimental pop album, An Album. The album was released on Björk's Ear label, a small subsidiary of One Little Indian. It produced one single, "Naturally", and another was planned for "Phoning", but never came to be. Around this time, she also sang two songs on Icelandic musician Didda's album, Strokið & slegið, with Valgeir Sigurdsson.
Magga opened for Björk on her Homogenic tour in 1998, appeared in various music festivals, including the infamous 2000 Roskilde and the 2006 Icelandic nature preservation festival Náttúrulaus, and released the covers album Magga Stína Syngur Megas in 2006, featuring folk covers of songs by Icelandic musician Megas.
