Forget The Tokens. THIS is what the song is about! AFRICA!!

To me, all the tracks on this particular album were super and still the best for me. I remember always keeping the repeat bottom of the player on to repeat continuously in the mid 90s........I don't know which of you still have the remaining tracks on that particular album to help me get them.

While I would certainly agree that this version is closer to Solomon Linda's Zulu original, I would not be so quick to dismiss the Tokens out of hand. The song is a dirge. It concerns the death of a beloved king, a lion, who sleeps because he has died. The mournful occasion inspires the male singe to sing into what is usually a female range. It is very difficult for men to sing into this range, and so only a few ever attempt it. The song is usually covered by female singers. The Tokens were a rare exception, and their version deserves recognition for that, in my view.

Another really outstanding English version of the song you might enjoy is by the street musicians who call themselves Acapella Soul. They also preserve the all-male tradition of the original version. You can find it here on youtube, probably just to the right of these comments.

@danno700 Uyimbube (pronounced "WEEM-boo-bay") is Zulu for "You are a lion." Mbube (EEM-boo-bay) is the Zulu word for lion. It was misinterpreted by one Pete Seeger as "Wimoweh" when he heard the original 1939 recording by one Solomon Linda.

It's really not pronounced WEEM in the beginning sylable of Uyimbube, and the word Mbume really doesn't start with an EEE sound either. A Western/European ear that hears that.

still considered the most wonderful song in AFRICA
