They have been together for over 7 years and are now 10 members strong, including a 3 piece horn section. Well known for their live acts both locally and in similar scenes around the UK, Makating are a captivating group of performers.
The core band Makating (meaning something 'powerful') was formed from a week long studio session in December 1994. Surprised by the results, the band rehearsed as an eight piece and performed their first shows in March 1995 quickly building a strong local following. The sound evolved from a foundation of strong dub reggae drum and bass line to incorporate rich melodies and harmonies in the vocals, brass and guitar work. The live act has always been a rare outing in entertainment, never failing to get a crowd dancing.
The band went into the studio again in 1996 and recorded what were to be their debut releases. The first single "Peace In The Garden" reached no. 11 in the Echoes Roots and Culture chart and was played on Radio 1 by John Peel, and Kiss FM by Joey J. The single was also featured by the legendary Jah Shaka on his heavyweight sound. The two follow up singles, "Over the Hills" and "Mr. Politician" were released in 1997 and sold well through out London's reggae shops. The final mixing and production of their debut album "Mackating" was done by Nick Mannasseh of Kiss FM and RIZ records. Two vocals, "Words of the Prophet" and "The Earth is The Lords", taken from the same session but not featured on the LP were released in 1998 on 12" vinyl. The record charted at no. 6 in the Dub Vendor Roots 12" listing.
The band currently performs and tours as a 10 piece line up featuring 3 vocalists - Front man Slim Levi and female singers Vicky Brown and Loraine Savin. Drum and Bass - Daniel and David Norland. A brass section - Ian Adlington (Tenor sax), Salim Chebbi (Soprano sax) and Shaggy (Trombone). Guitar - Bob, Percussion and Melodica - Dave Sawdon and Keyboards - Aron Shamash.
The success of the first set of releases gave the band a growing reputation which resulted in a string of live stage shows all around the country. Bookings ranged from summertime festivals and carnivals (Severn Revels, Luton Carnival, Exodus Festival, Oxstock 98, Lyme Regis Carnival, Brighton Peace Festival) to university and college functions and balls. The band have played to pubs and clubs from Devon to Nottingham. Makating have appeared as a support act for Edward II and over the past two years have also taken on the role of backing unit for Wayne McArthur's live shows. Makating have taken part in successful promotional events for Red Stripe Beer and for 'Source' alco-pop.
In January 1998, the band were given the temporary run of an old school building where they set up a recording and rehearsal studio. They quickly started on a new set of material and production work involved the reggae artist Creation Steppa and the renowned engineer and mixer Preacher. The resulting CD "Stone By Stone" was released in summer 1999 and is now in its second production run and still selling well.
Year 2000 saw the band relocate to their current home at Cave Street Soundworks Recording Studio. By 2001 Makating were settled into recording material for a third release 'Strong Enough'. This time round the mixing work was done by Russ D of The Disciples and results have given Makating their strongest CD yet.
Upon finishing the mixing, Makating spent August 2001 taking pre-release copies of their third CD out on a tour across France where they performed to crowds from Dunkerk to Montpellier.
