Esta mesma região gerou outros grandes nomes do blues americano, incluindo Clifton Chenier, Janis Joplin, Lonnie Brooks, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, e Kenny Neal.
Nascida em uma família musical, Ball começou a tocar piano aos 5 anos de idade, e mostrou um interesse inicial em tocar piano estilo Nova Orleans, como exemplificado por Fats Domino, Professor Longhaire e James Booker. Em 1970, aos 21 anos, ela fundou uma banda country progressiva chamada Freda and the Firedogs em Austin, Texas; em 1974 ela começou sua carreira solo.
Ball é conhecida por seu estilo de piano, que mostra elementos de zydeco, blues do pântano e boogie woogie. A maioria de suas gravações mais conhecidas saiu na Rounder Records nos anos 1980 e início dos anos 1990. Ela foi introduzida no Austin Music Hall of Fame em 1990.
Em 2008, Ball fez uma aparição com o Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue.
