The last time we talked, Mr. Smith
You reduced me to tears
I promise you, it won't happen again
Do I attract you?
Do I repulse you with my queasy smile?
Am I too dirty?
Am I too flirty?
Do I like what you like?
I could be wholesome
I could be loathsome
I guess I'm a little bit shy
Why don't you like me?
Why don't you like me without making me try?
I try to be like Grace Kelly (mmh)
But all her looks were too sad (ahh)
So I tried a little Freddie (mmh)
I've gone identity mad
I could be brown
I could be blue
I could be violet sky
I could be hurtful
I could be purple
I could be anything you like
Gotta be green
Gotta be mean
Gotta be everything more
Why don't you like me?
Why don't you like me?
Why don't you walk out the door
(Getting angry doesn't solve anything)
How can I help it?
How can I help it?
How can I help what you think?
Hello, my baby
Hello, my baby
Putting my life on my brink
Why don't you like me?
Why don't you like me?
Why don't you like yourself?
Should I bend over?
Should I look older just to be put on your shelf?
I try to be like Grace Kelly (mmh)
But all her looks were too sad (ahh)
So I tried a little Freddie (mmh)
I've gone identity mad
I could be brown
I could be blue
I could be violet sky
I could be hurtful
I could be purple
I could be anything you like
Gotta be green
Gotta be mean
Gotta be everything more
Why don't you like me?
Why don't you like me?
Walk out the door
Say what you want to satisfy yourself, hey
But you only want what everybody else says you should want
You want
I could be brown
I could be blue
I could be violet sky
I could be hurtful
I could be purple
I could be anything you like
Gotta be green
Gotta be mean
Gotta be everything more
Why don't you like me?
Why don't you like me?
Walk out the door
I could be brown
I could be blue
I could be violet sky
I could be hurtful
I could be purple
I could be anything you like
Gotta be green
Gotta be mean
Gotta be everything more
Why don't you like me?
Why don't you like me?
Walk out the door, ooh
Humphrey, we're leaving
Ka-ching
The lyrics to Mika's song Grace Kelly touch upon themes of self-identity and external validation. The song starts off with the singer expressing a desire to communicate with someone, possibly after a previous conversation left them in tears. The singer then questions whether they attract or repulse the person they are addressing, and wonders if they are too dirty or flirty for their liking. They also express their willingness to be whatever the other person wants them to be, from wholesome to loathsome, in an effort to get them to like them without having to try so hard.
The singer then mentions trying to be like Grace Kelly, a Hollywood icon known for her poise and beauty, but finding her looks "too sad." They then "tried a little Freddie," referencing Freddie Mercury, the flamboyant frontman of Queen, suggesting that they have gone "identity mad," trying to be someone they're not. The singer then lists off all the different ways they could present themselves to try and please the other person, from green to mean, but still questions why they don't like them and urges them to walk out the door if they don't.
Overall, the lyrics to Grace Kelly capture the struggle to find self-acceptance while being open to the opinions of others. The singer is willing to change themselves to fit someone else's expectations, but ultimately questions why they can't be liked for who they are.
