The triptych of members include Ryan Gregory, Thomas Hartwell and Mark Perez, long-time friends who met in highschool and emerged from various other Flint, Michigan musical projects to become Morseville Bridge. They named the group after an abandoned bridge in Montrose, Michigan, where the three would skip school, hang out and jam. Their creative and ambidextrous approach to instrumentation (Ryan was previously a drummer, Mark a singer, in respective pre-MB projects) is precisely what gives them such an original sound.
Morseville blend bluesy organic guitar slides with darker experimental instrumentation to create catchy pop-rock riffs that ensure their songs remain etched in your memory. Singer and lead guitarist Ryan Gregory captivates with a voice that is at once misanthropic and cheerful; his lyrics intersperse childhood nostalgia with social reflections; he is fascinated with contradictions and juxtapositions. Drummer/trumpet player Thomas Hartwell beats time on an unorthodox modified drum kit while simultaneously adding texture and rhythm- playing tambourine with his feet. Mark Perez plays bass (here electric, there acoustic), timbale drums, and sings.
Morseville Bridge set themselves apart with their thoughtful and unusual approach to the band, from start to finish. Touring in a 1984 maroon hearse named Rosie, customizing their tunings and using found objects as drum cymbals, they even create a breathtaking and energizing live show with 20-odd vintage lamps set up all over the stage. In an ocean of over-polished and hyper-produced rock and pop acts, Morseville Bridge maintain committed to the ideology of indie. Artist/lead guitarist Ryan Gregory hand-makes nearly all Morseville merch from re-purposed materials, be it record sleeves made from vintage book pages or T-shirts printed on reused fabric.
Despite their short existence to date, Morseville Bridge have made a name for themselves in the Michigan music scene, having played all over the state as well as locally, and with well-known acts such as Question Mark, The Mysterians and Frigid Pink. They have come a long way from their winter 2008 3 song demo to their fall 2009 8 song self-titled EP. Recorded at Audio Chemistry in Auburn Hills, MI., the EP preserves the sonic depth, earthiness and sincerity that give Morseville their signature exploratory sound. The band were featured late last year in two Comcast “On Demand” shows by summer 2009, in the midst of playing a flurry of local shows, they managed to produce a music video for their self-titled and self-released EP single “Hostage”. The video will be released in late 2009 through the Motion Picture institute of Michigan. 2010 holds a great deal of promise for Morseville Bridge, it will no doubt see a tour in support of their new EP and wider distribution of the very same record.
Their infuences run the gamut from Modest Mouse to Tiny Tim. They are inspired by natural acoustic noises and try to reflect this in their music making, using as many acoustic instruments as possible.
The members consist of:
Ryan Gregory: Vocals, guitar, tamborine, snare, bike wheel, shakers, violin, random noise.
Mark Gregorio: Bass, vocals, piano innards, bell, guitar, timballi drums, maracas, thunder, random noise.
Thomas Hartwell: beats, chimes, trumpet, slide guitar, vocals, and yet more random noise.
