Torn
Natalie Imbruglia Lyrics

I thought I saw a man brought to life
He was warm, he came around like he was dignified
He showed me what it was to cry
Well, you couldn't be that man I adored
You don't seem to know, or seem to care what your heart is for
But I don't know him anymore

There's nothin' where he used to lie
The conversation has run dry
That's what's goin' on

Nothing's fine, I'm torn
I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor
Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see
The perfect sky is torn
You're a little late
I'm already torn

So I guess the fortune teller's right
Should've seen just what was there and not some holy light
But you crawled beneath my veins and now

I don't care, I had no luck
I don't miss it all that much
There's just so many things

That I can touch, I'm torn
I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor
Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see
The perfect sky is torn
You're a little late
I'm already torn
Torn

There's nothing where he used to lie
My inspiration has run dry
And that's what's goin' on

Nothing's right, I'm torn
I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor
Illusion never changed
Into something real
I'm wide awake and I can see
The perfect sky is torn
I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I'm ashamed
Bound and broken on the floor
You're a little late
I'm already torn
Torn
Oh

I've always liked this song, anyone alive in the late 90s heard this many many times but it never gets old. It's well written and Natalie Imbruglia delivered an absolutely epic performance.

Being a lot younger when this came out, although I loved it for what it is, I didn't fully grasp or be in a position to understand and relate to the profound story the song tells. It's really spot on, perfectly encapsulates something most of us have or will experience.

This song reaches brilliance. The story about being strung along, being mislead by someone you love as to the true nature of their feelings towards you and their plans as far as having you in their lives long term.

You come to realize the person you love isn't real, it's a caricature employed to give the appearance of love. They were born only in your mind and in reality they can't actually live up to what you hope they can be.
"I don't know him anymore.." Yeah because when you realize all you've been getting is a caricature, you realize you hardly know their real self.

"I'm all out of faith" you have always hoped they really care about you and want a future with you, but you now realize it was false hope and that they will never be serious about the relationship with you. You reach a point when you can't keep living to yourself and you have no choice but to accept reality as is not what you'd like it to be.

"Cold and shamed, lying naked on the floor"
You can't believe you didn't realize what was going on for so long. Now it's so obvious, why didn't you see it before?

"Illusion never changed into something real"
The relationship, the future plans, were never going to happen. At one point it may have looked as if it was real but it was just an illusion, it was never real.

"Wide awake"
You are now aware if what's happenin.

"The perfect sky is torn"
It may have seemed perfect at first but that's been torn to shreds.

"You're a little late I'm already torn"
If they really cared they would have at least tried to repair things before right now. You've already determined the right course of action. Your view of the relationship is torn and once something is torn up its nearly impossible to return it to a pristine state.

"Should have seen what was there and not some holy light"
Looking back, the reality was almost obvious and it was staring you right in the face, you saw what you wanted to see.

"Have no luck" Thigs go wrong so often you are almost resigned to it.
