He studied music at Oxford University and composition at the National Film and Television School (NFTS).
He has worked on a wide variety of projects with varying subjects, requirements and budgets- from ambient music in the London and Paris Aquariums, to award winning feature documentaries for HBO and the BBC; from charity films for Amnesty International, The New York Times and the Guardian, to commercials for Saatchi & Saatchi and Santander.
In 2015 Nicholas was nominated for Best Composition in Feature Film at the International Music & Sound Awards, and for Outstanding Music and Sound in the News and Documentary Emmy Awards, for his work on the multi-award winning HBO feature documentary Night Will Fall. In 2016 he worked with the same team on the film Where the Wind Blew, about the effects of nuclear testing, the music from which was performed in Astana, Kazakhstan, using traditional instruments. He is currently scoring a Werner Herzog feature about Mikhail Gorbachev, due in 2019.
