Having a strong affinity to music from a very early age, Schofield spent the majority of his teenage years performing in various rock bands around his hometown of Melbourne, Australia . After completing high-school, Ryan found a new passion for electronic music through underground electronic music festivals and night-clubs and soon began collecting records. In 2001, Ryan was introduced to a freeware tracker program called Buzz (www.buzzmachines.com) and what began as toying-around with programming some rather primitive beats and bleeps in his spare time away from his Audio Engineering course soon took shape to become the very first Oblique Industries tracks.
To this day, it is clear to see that Schofield still maintains a strong leaning toward live music from his productions and live shows as Oblique Industries, combining organic instruments including percussion, voice and cello with electronic synths, samplers and drum machines. Ryan also performs as Australian percussionist for Kaya Project (Interchill/UK).
Not one to be restricted by the boundaries of genre, Oblique Industries distinctive sound draws influence from techno, house, minimal, electro, progressive and experimental sounds as well as dub, jazz, rock and world music.
In April 2011, Oblique Industries was hand-selected by Richie Hawtin as the winner the Plastikman 'Ask Yourself' Remix Competition out of over 1300 entries from around the world, earning him a place on the definitive Plastikman anthology, 'Arkives' on seminal techno label Minus Records. Oblique Industries music is also available through UK-based techno label Bigger Deer Recordings, French label Bus Records, Canada's Interchill Records and Finland's Planetaria Recordings and Australia's own Subsonic Music, with more tracks slated for release soon on Chameleon Recordings, Open Records and Smash Bang Records.
"His '12-step remix' of Ask Yourself draws on the complex 2-step drum patterns of UK garage and takes them on a step or ten further, creating a unique groove that suits perfectly the more experimental reaches of Plastikman's output whilst maintaining a deft melodic touch." (www.m-nus.com)
2011 also saw Ryan spread his wings as a touring artist, bringing his live show to the international stage with his first ever tour of Europe and Asia with performances throughout France, Germany, Poland, UK, China and Japan.
On his influences, Schofield lists a selection of artists from a wide array of genres including '
KiNK, Trentemoller, Alex Smoke, Stephan Bodzin, Marc Romboy, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Nicolas Jaar, Flying Lotus, Radio Slave, Maetrik, Thomas Schumacher, Mark Henning, Stimming, Minilogue, Gui Boratto, Pantha Du Prince, Heinrichs & Hirtenfellener, Antix/Fiord, Justin Martin, Claude Von Stroke, Burial, James Blake, Maceo Plex, Plastikman and the whole M_nus records sound.
Paying homage to his hometown contemporaries in an interview with pulseradio.net, Ryan says, 'I also take a lot of inspiration from the many musically talented friends I have around me here in Melbourne (and around Australia): Closer Apart, Thankyou City, Jamie Stevens, Steve Ward, Child, Uone, Timmus, Shades of Gray, Lub Dub, Opiou, Son:Monx... I'm sure I'm missing some. There's a lot of talent down here!'
