He has played in many jazz and pop groups (such as Pražský Bigband, Pražský výběr, Ladislav Štaidl Orchestra, Karel Gott Orchestra and with musician Jiří Stivín). Soukup has both written and arranged musical scores.
After 1980 he devoted himself to composing, and he has since written many songs for several different vocalists. He has also started producing records. He has composed soundtracks for many short Czech and Slovak animated movies, and has worked with several TV stations, such as ZDF, ORF, etc. He wrote the score for a BBC film about war pilots titled “The Forgotten Men.”
In 1983, Soukup worked on his first feature film project, “The Second Move With the Pawn”, a film about a struggle between Communist and imperialist spies. Since then he has written soundtracks for twenty feature films, including “Kolya,” a Jan Svěrák film that that won an American Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Foreign Film in 1997.
From 1994 to 1998 he collaborated with the Spanish production companies Tijuana and RTVE, for which he composed music for the Cuttlas Hero series.
In 1998 he togherer with Jan Jirásek received the Czech Lion Award for Best Film Composition for the movie “The Ambiguous Report of the End of the World”.
Ondřej Soukup also composed a score for Jan Svěrák's movie “Dark Blue World” and he received his second Czech Lion award for the Best Sound Track in 2001.
He has also worked very closely with the well-known Czech singer Lucie Bílá and has composed music for her three very successful albums: Missariel (1992), Lucie Bílá (1995), and Jampadampa (2003). He also produced her album Hvězdy jako hvězdy (“Stars as Stars”) (1997). The album Missariel received seven Czech Grammy nominations and won five such awards in 1993.
One of Soukup's most interesting projects was the music for the ballet “Checkmate” along with the music for the theatrical performance of "The Garden of Earthly Delights," which was inspired by the life of Hieronymus Bosch. On March 30, 2000, his musical “Joan of Arc” premiered, with lyrics written by Gabriela Osvaldová, libretto by Jiří Hubač. This show was seen by over 350,000 people at its 825 performances. “Joan of Arc” was then invited to Great Britain to the Cardiff First World Musical Festival. The success of the musical in Cardiff proved that the production was also able to attract an international audience. “Joan of Arc” will be also presented in Spain in the autumn of 2006 and spring 2007. The piece was poeticized by Gabriel Sopena and three pilot recordings were sung by contemporary famous Spanish singer Carmen Paris and Nando (See the previews).
Ondřej Soukup collaborated with Gabriel Sopena in the past on the Cuttlas Hero TV series and together they also wrote a tango Canalla for Lucie Šoralová’s album Púšť („The Desert“). Ondřej Soukup produced this album.
Musical Láska je Láska (“Love is Love”) is performed in Ta Fantastika Theatre in Prague since 2004. Songs written for Lucie Bílá by Gabriela Osvaldová and Ondřej Soukup in years 1992 – 2003 were used in this musical. “Love is Love” is still on with Lucie Bílá as a main star without being alternated.
Musical Elixír života (“The Elixir of life”) premiered at the same theatre October 14th, 2005. This piece draws very nontraditionally from life of doctor Max Wolf.
Ondřej Soukup’s wife Gabriela Osvaldová is a famous Czech lyricist. They collaborate on most projects and are known as a composer – lyricist team. They were part of the two juries of two volumes of the singer competition “Česko hledá Superstar” (Czech version of British competition Pop Idol) show at TV NOVA in years 2004 and 2005.
Currently Ondřej works with violinist Pavel Šporcl at crossover project “Halliuve“. First piece with the same name was produced as a single by Supraphon. The project should be complete at the end of 2006.
Soukup’s biggest hobby since early 90ties is flying airplanes. He is a licensed pilot who has earned his instrument rating and most often flies his own single-engine, four-passenger Piper warrior P28A plane. His furthest flight was to Gibraltar and to Casablanca.
