In 2007, the two joined the 7-piece post-rock band …and then nothing, Nadia on vocals and ZEF on a laptop setup. Inspired by the possibilities afforded by the melding of electronic and acoustic sounds, it was during this time Nadia & ZEF developed a friendship and undeniable musical connection. However, as …ATN had always been more of a side project for its members, Gaudet kept working on her solo music. Interested in further exploring the mix of her piano and voice with electronic textures, she approached ZEF to collaborate on the production of a new album, and Over the Transom was born.
The nocturnal nature of their sound draws from Gaudet’s ghostly singing style, honest lyrics and dreamy piano melodies melding to ZEF’s digital landscape of electronic beats and real-time sonic manipulation.
Things don’t stop with the sound. Both being rather prolific and multidisciplinary artists, Over the Transom affords an inspiring creative outlet for the two where there is a constant exchange of art sketches and videos along with the musical ideas and song lyrics.
The project may be new, but the vast pool of creative potential which now lies before these two is enough to fuel very exciting sights and sounds for some time to come.
NADIA
Winnipeg songstress Nadia Gaudet’s emotionally charged songs and captivating stage presence have lead to numerous awards on the francophone music scene. She was a finalist at the renowned Festival international de la chanson de Granby in 2003 and she was named as a Sacré Talents by Montreal’s Radio-Canada in 2004. She experiments with eerie melodies, ethereal harmonies, melding English and French lyrics, and continually pushing the limits of her musicality as a singer-songwriter and pianist. She released her first full length album in 2006, which was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award. Influenced by the 7 piece post-rock band …and then nothing, she went on to release a self-titled EP in 2010, highlighting her penchant for ambient pop melodies and electronic beats.
Dabbling in graphic design and photography, her newest project, Over the Transom, provides her with the chance not only to write and compose music that she loves, but also to explore her talents as a visual artist.
ZEF
ZEF has played drums in numerous Winnipeg bands since 1994. In 2007, he started experimenting more with electronic manipulation of sound. Fully integrating it into his setup with Winnipeg post rock outfit, …and then nothing.
As well as being a musician, ZEF is also a visual artist in his own right, having worked in television for the CBC and Radio-Canada as well as having produced pieces of his own. He is currently commissioned by La société des arts technologique in Montréal to create an original piece for their 210 degree projection dôme (Le satosphère).
