As a pianist he was, at best, mediocre; but his parents dragged him to events in Sarasota, Florida's jewish community at which he sang standards and played piano for gawking guests. Though he had a dismal start, he soon discovered classical music and his passion. He learned music theory and history at a performing arts high school where he picked up violin, ukelele, piano, and trumpet . He studied composition in community college with Rex Willis, who had been a student of composer Aaron Copland. During this time he listened to avante-guarde jazz; Frank Zappa, The Lounge Lizards, The Bad Plus, Medeski Martin and Wood, and Soft machine. He studied jazz with a pianist and a trumpet player. He listened to classical music; Liszt, Wagner, Debussy, Stravinsky, Mahler, and studied classical piano with a Doctorate pianist. He read beat poetry and listened to the literary protest music of Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, and John Lennon. At the same time he was attracted to the beauty and eccentricity of bizarre music; Tom Waits, Devendra Banhart, Akron/Family, and Animal Collective. He bought books of manuscript and wrote everything from symphonic poems to lead sheets for pop songs. he had jam parties with musician friends and dreamed of conducting his own orchestra. He brought together his friends and fellow students as "the Saracens"; the closest thing he has to his dream. They perform in places as diverse as the music they play; from classical recital halls, to arts festivals, to beaches with their mix of classical music, jazz, folk, and the avante-guarde.
