Paul Romero enjoys an award-winning career as both a classical pianist and a soundtrack composer.
Paul Romero has composed over 70 original soundtrack movie and computer game scores, including the monumental orchestral/operatic/choral scores to Ubisoft Corporation's popular computer game series, "HEROES OF MIGHT AND MAGIC". So popular are the "HEROES OF MIGHT AND MAGIC" scores that Paul is obliged to compose his first Symphony based on the best musical themes from his "HEROES" soundtrack scores. Romero's Symphony no. 1, entitled "HEROES" will be completed in 2008.
Romero is also the composer of Sony's "EVERQUEST", the world's most popular online computer game. Romero is the winner of the BMI-Jerry Goldsmith Film Composers Award as well as the recipient of 2 National Endowment for the Arts grants. Two of Romero's original scores for the "HEROES OF MIGHT AND MAGIC" series have been listed in GameSpot Magazine's ALL-TIME TOP TEN COMPUTER GAME SCORES. The CD soundtrack collection from the complete 'HEROES' series was released in January by UBISOFT and is available at most retail outlets around the world.
As a classical concert pianist, Romero is the winner of numerous international piano competitions including the Paris and the Van Cliburn international piano competitions. Famed music critic Wayne Lee Gay of the Dallas-Fort Worth Star Telegram recently wrote "Romero evoked the aura of the golden age of the virtuoso, when Liszt and his cohorts crisscrossed Europe and the United States, presenting solo recitals of transcriptions, monumental showpieces and their original music to culture-hungry audiences....The thunderous opening chords announced Romero as a fearless virtuoso of the old school, an impression he continued to reinforce in the long series of fancy elaborations....ranging from delicate passage work to roaring octaves."
Paul is a Southern California native and taught himself to play the piano at age of three. He began his formal piano and composition training at age 9 and made his concert debut at the age of 11, playing a Mozart piano concerto with the Santa Monica Symphony. Paul composed his first original piano concerto at the age of 13. This concerto was premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington D.C. under maestro Mstislav Rostropovich, with Paul as the piano soloist. The premiere took place at the Kennedy Center and was followed by an encore performance at the United Nations General Assembly Hall in NYC. This U.N. concert was televised around the world and brought Paul international attention as a young composing prodigy. Yamaha music label recorded the concerts and the CD is still available today in Japan.
At the age of 16 Paul received a full college scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he studied composing under Pulitzer Prize-winner Ned Rorem. Paul also studied piano under Vladimir Sokoloff, Jorge Bolet, and chamber music with members of the Guanari String Quartet. Paul finished his musical training at the Paris Conservatoire and the Guildhall School of Music in London.
Paul has performed in major capitals of the world such as Tokyo, London, Paris, New York, Washington DC. Some of Paul's recent concert highlights have been his performances at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Mexican Embassy in Washington DC, the Palace of the France-Americique Institute in Paris, Carnegie Hall, and most recently, two performances at the Gemeldiche Museum in Berlin as well as one performance at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. Paul Romero's latest CD, "An American In Paris", features his live performance in Paris of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
Paul Romero will be featured in the new Sundance movie, 'THE GIFT', a feature-lengrh documentary about classical musicians who were former child prodigies.
