Sailin' home
Piet Veerman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sailin` home across the ocean,
sailin` home we`re goin` to be free.
Down below the crew`s in motion,
to defy the violence of the sea.
Feelin` young, feelin` strong,
at the hight of the fight,
so nothing can go wrong.
We know we`ll always wanna be,
fighting the sea.

Giant waves are rollin` higher,
`s gonna be a cold and rainy night.
Hands on deck are raw and tired,
prayin` for a sign of distant light.
Feelin` young, feelin` strong,
and the might of the night,
is pounding dark and long.
We know we`ll always wanna be,
fighting the sea.

But there`s the light,
and there`s the fire.
The harbour key,
shines dimly on the shore.
We can see the steeple spire.
And we know ,
we won the fight once more.
Feelin` young, feelin` strong,
and tonight came out right.
But tomorrow could be wrong.
We know we`ll always wanna be,
fighting the sea.
Sailin’ home, sailin’ home.

Overall Meaning

The song "Sailin' Home" by Piet Veerman is a tribute to sailors who venture out into the vast and unpredictable ocean, braving the fury of the sea and the harsh elements. The opening lines describe the journey across the ocean with a sense of freedom and adventure. The crew working below deck is a testament to their defiance against the violence of the sea. The song highlights the feeling of being young and strong, despite the challenges ahead. As the ship sails into the night, the waves grow bigger, and the night becomes colder and darker. The crew's hands are raw and tired as they pray for a sign of distant light to guide them safely to their destination.

The song's tone changes as the crew catches the first glimpse of light from the harbour key, and the spire of the steeple in the distance. That light symbolizes hope and victory to the sailors, who fought through the night to make it home safely. The song ends on a hopeful note, with the sailors feeling young and strong, yet acknowledging that tomorrow is another day and another adventure they have to face. The song's lyrics manage to capture the essence of a sailor's life, where every day is a battle with the sea, and every night brings hope for a safe return home.
