Formed from the ashes of earlier embryonic Christchurch groups (Murder Strikes Pink, The Vacuum) they featured Roy Montgomery (Guitar and vocals), Ross Humphries (Bass and Vocals) ,Peter (Buck) Stapleton (Drums), and very occasional backing vocals from Mary Heney.
Their sound was a mixture of Velvetesque drone and mancunian grey, overlayed with Montgomery's deadpan baritone and driven along by Stapletons often frenetic drumming, combining influences from their musical roots in 60's punk and 70's punk/new wave/krautrock.
Their first single Ambivalence/Columbia was released in 1981 featuring a fine black on black hand screenprinted cover by close acquaintance and local artist Ronnie Van Hout. This had the catalogue no. FN001 and was the first record pressed for Flying Nun, though the band pretty much arranged and distributed it themselves.
They released a further 7" Coat/Jim soon after. Again with a hand screenprinted cover by Van Hout. Their last release was the 5 track 12 The Pin Group Go to Town, released though Flying Nun.
The band members went on to record and play in The Terminals and Dadamah, and in Roy Montgomery's case , a number of solo recordings.
A Collection of their works was later released through a retrospective cd on the Siltbreeze label, featuring among it alternative mixes and recordings of their previously released songs.
