It broadcasts live on 93.3 WMMR Philadelphia from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. EST, Monday through Friday.
The show started in 1998 with Preston Elliot (formerly of WDRE Philadelphia) and Marilyn Russell (also formerly of WDRE Philadelphia), on WPLY Y100 Philadelphia. Several months after the show's start, Steve Morrison of WDRE New York, and also formerly of WDRE Philadelphia, joined the cast. After four successful years of (then known as) "The Y100 Morning Show with Preston, Marilyn, and Steve", Marilyn Russell left the morning show on March 1, 2002 due to family reasons. She has been on many stations in the Philadelphia area since then, including WXPN, WMGK, and SoJo 104.9. Around that time, Dan Lerner, the independent owner of Y100, sold the station to Radio One, a national broadcasting corporation, in 2001. Radio One and Preston and Steve did not successfully negotiate a new contract, and the personalities agreed to a deal with local broadcasting group Greater Media. Preston and Steve's contract with Radio One expired on February 24, 2005 and Y100 changed format and became WPHI The Beat at 11:50 p.m. EDT that same day.
After a legal battle between Radio One and Preston and Steve over the Non-compete clause in the pair's contract, District Court judge Cynthia Rufie granted the duo permission to go back on the air at their new station, 93.3 WMMR. The winning argument in the case presented by Preston and Steve and Greater Media was, that as Y100 had flipped formats, they were no longer in competition with WMMR. The show first aired on WMMR on Monday, May 16, 2005.
The Preston and Steve show features local DJs Preston Elliot and Steve Morrison as the lead men, with "Caseyboy", Kathy Romano, and Nick McIlwain as sidekicks. "Caseyboy", as he is known, serves as the show's producer, while Kathy Romano serves as the news and traffic woman. Nick McIlwain, who serves as the show's associate producer, took over for Rick Del Gado, formerly of the Opie and Anthony morning show. Prior to working for Preston and Steve, Rick was fired by Infinity Broadcasting when the Opie and Anthony show was cancelled following the Sex for Sam incident. After leaving the show, Rick was fired again by New York's Hot 97 for his creation of the "Tsunami Song", an offensive racial song for which the station was widely criticized. Rick currently produces "Strawberry In The Morning" at KYLD San Francisco, which is owned by Clear Channel.
The Preston and Steve show is known for its humor, the use of (and occasional overuse) of various sound clips, and its connection with the local community. Steve Morrison, a former stand-up comedian, often provides jokes and impressions (Pilot Steve, Ronald Reagan, Michael Jackson, Tom Brokaw, Tony Danza and Queen Elizabeth II are among his most frequent) for the show, while Preston Elliot keeps the show's momentum going by steering the conversations, and taking calls. Random conversations often occur on the Preston and Steve show, often with listener input. There are also several bits that the show performs daily:
* "The Bizarre File" or "B-File" (Formerly "The Bizarro File") - Elliot reads funny, gross, or just bizarre news stories found on the internet; airs twice a day at around 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m..
* "Hollywood Trash" - Morrison reads celebrity news or gossip, and ends every clip with a joke; airs once a day at around 8:30 a.m..
* "Music News" - Elliot reads music news, airs once a day at around 9 a.m..
* "Love You/Hate You Line" - An idea Rick Del Gado brought from Opie and Anthony, the Love You/Hate You Line is a toll-free number that listeners can call to rant about others, or profess their love. The messages are edited and are aired leading into commercial breaks.
