Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand
Primitive Radio Gods Lyrics

Jan lays down and wrestles in her sleep
Moonlight spills on comic books
And superstars in magazines
An old friend calls and tells us where to meet
Her plane takes off from Baltimore
And touches down on Bourbon Street

We sit outside and argue all night long
About a god we've never seen
But never fails to side with me
Sunday comes and all the papers say
Ma Teresa's joined the mob
And happy with her full time job

Do do do do do do

Am I alive or thoughts that drift away?
Does summer come for everyone?
Can humans do as prophets say?
And if I die before I learn to speak
Can money pay for all the days I lived awake
But half asleep?

Do do do do do do

A life is time, they teach us growing up
The seconds ticking killed us all
A million years before the fall
You ride the waves and don't ask where they go
You swim like lions through the crest
And bathe yourself on zebra flesh

I've been downhearted baby,
I've been downhearted baby,
Ever since the day we met

This song is a time machine. It transports me to my grandma's house in Oklahoma City. It's the summer of 1996. My family is visiting during summer vacation. I heard this song everywhere on that trip. I watched MTV in hopes I'd see this video. I loved it. It was so new, so creative, so emotional. I can still remember the day we left to drive home from that trip. My dad scanned through the radio stations to find something good as we drove away. I remember him stopping when he heard this song. I remember us exiting the city as this song played, the sky bright and clear and filled with early morning light. I remember him asking me if I liked this song. I said I loved it. He said he did too. The world felt so simple and beautiful. My dad died last year, but every time I hear this song, it brings him back to life in my mind. It brings back the simple and beautiful and hopeful feelings of the future. He's right there. Nothing has changed, but everything has changed.

“Can money pay for all the days I’ve lived awake but half asleep?”

If that line doesn’t hit you like a ton of bricks, check your pulse my friend. Such a beautiful yet depressing lyric.
