The duo were originally two of several members of the band of GOBBLE GOBBLE (now Born Gold). While on tour with Gobble Gobble, Roddick began experimenting with rnb and hip hop beats. James was asked to sing on a track called "Ungirthed," thus forming Purity Ring. The song was released in January 2011.
On April 3, 2012, Purity Ring announced that they were signed by media company 4AD world-wide and Last Gang Records in Canada. Later in the same month the band announced their debut album, Shrines, set to be released July 24, 2012. They also debuted the first single from the album titled "Obedear." On June 20, 2012, Purity Ring released another single from the album titled "Fineshrine." The album reached number 100 on the UK Albums Chart. In the United States, it reached number thirty-two on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Dance/Electronic Albums.

Cut open my sternum and pull
My little ribs around you
Through arms, or maybe under, under you
I'll put the South pockets gladly
Over the rocky cliffs that you leap
To peer over and not forget what feet are
splitting threads of thunder over me
That I might see with my chest and sink
into the edges round you
Into the lakes and quarries that brink
on all the edges round you, round you
Get a little closer, let fold
Cut open my sternum and pull
My little ribs around you
The London baby crowns over you
Get a little closer let fold
Cut open my sternum and pull
My little ribs around you
Through arms, or maybe under, under you
I'll put the South pockets gladly
Over the rocky cliffs that you leap
To peer over and not forget what feet are
Splitting threads of thunder over me
Listen closely, closely to the floor
Emitting all its graces through the pores
You'd make a fine shrine in me
You'd build a fine shrine to me
That I might see with my chest and sink
Into the edges round you
Into the lakes and quarries that brink
On all the edges round you, round you
Get a little closer, let fold
Cut open my sternum and pull
My little ribs around you
The London baby crowns over you
Get a little closer, let fold
Cut open my sternum and pull
My little ribs around you
Through arms, or maybe under, under you
The lyrics to "Fineshrine" by Purity Ring are full of intense imagery, evoking feelings of closeness and vulnerability. The opening lines, "Get a little closer, let fold, Cut open my sternum and pull, My little ribs around you," suggest a desire for intimacy and a willingness to give oneself over to another person completely. The idea of physically wrapping oneself around someone else is both powerful and unsettling, and sets the stage for the rest of the lyrics.
The subsequent lines continue to emphasize this sense of closeness, with references to rocky cliffs, thunder, and lakes and quarries. The singer seems to be suggesting that they want to be completely enveloped by the person they're singing to, and to become a part of the natural world around them. The line "Listen closely, closely to the floor, Emitting all its graces through the pores" serves as a reminder that everything around us is alive and full of energy, and that our bodies and souls are constantly being influenced by the world around us.
The final verse, "You'd make a fine shrine in me, You'd build a fine shrine to me" suggests that the singer is willing to honor and worship the person they're singing to, and that they see them as something sacred and holy. The lyrics to "Fineshrine" are intense and deeply personal, conveying a sense of vulnerability and a desperate desire for closeness.
