Engstad working on the tunes and vocal harmonies in Tora’s studio apartment at Grünerløkka in Oslo.
At that time Kristian was bartending at Robinet, a small bar next to the Rockerfeller stage, and a hangout for various people from the Norwegian music scene. Anders Møller and Mats Engen from Euroboys also worked in the same bar, and Cato Thomassen, Einar Stokke Fadnes, Trond Mjøen and Jo Schumann were all regulars. After closing hours, they often discussed various ideas of different bands and musicians working together. It never got to more than pathetic late-night enthusiasm until the demo of Restore To Past was played on the stereo, and an opportunity of fusion between the guys behind and in front of the bar appeared.
There was a new wave of modern Norwegian folk music that year, and the demo was really inspired by these catchier beats.
In the autumn of 2004, they entered into the recording studio. That’s where the problems started and all coherent ideas about the project were erased for seven years.
Everyone had different expectations and preferences when it came to recording an album. Some were experienced musicians, whereas others had never set foot in a studio before. When the recording started the tunes changed and found their own way, Norwegian folk music against “Tom Petty”, “Alison Krauss” versus “Stevie Nicks”, and the members of the group couldn’t agree on anything. The atmosphere in the studio got worse by the day, and in the end it was impossible to get a single idea through without it being slaughtered down by the others. Still, everyone was left with the feeling that they had made the fundament of something unique.
After the studio session, They tried to meet for rehearsal, but it was clear to everyone that the band would never work together again. They cut off all communication, only making an exception when they had something sufficiently mean to say.
In some strange fashion, the project went on, pulled in stages by one band member after the other. In the end, after seven years, they managed to get together over the project after all. It took three more years to make it to the finish line.
20th of June 2014 Restore To Past released the album Restore To Past, 10 years after the project was started.
