It’s safe to say that almost everyone who reads this has come across a sticker with the iconic Rhythmicru logo – in a bathroom, on a public phone, on a newspaper box, or somewhere across the city – some time in the last several years. Like the city they represent, Rhythmicru is diverse enough to be equally at home dropping jazzy, De La-style head-nodders or brilliantly poignant political battle cries. Their Heads Connect series, these days often featuring guests from their collective of Montreal friends Island City Monsters, are some of the most anticipated regular hip hop shows in Toronto. Adding to the vibe is their uniquely creative visual arts and multimedia presentation, including the Open Canvas community mural project created by the audience during the show.
Rhythmicru has released three full-length albums: Rhythmicwho? (2001), Open Canvas (2003), and SuperToke MixTape Vol. 1 (2006); along with the Roxton Chronicles limited edition (2005). They have sold over 10,000 copies independently. They have opened club shows and festivals in Toronto across Canada for the likes of Ill Bill, Non Phixion, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, and Guru.
