Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Stein wrote scores for numerous low budget horror and exploitation films during the 1950s and 1960s, many of which were released by American International Pictures. These films included Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman (1958), Roger Corman's It Conquered the World (1956), Not of This Earth (1957), and The Terror (1963), and Francis Ford Coppola's Dementia 13 (1963). He also occasionally provided scores for major studio productions such as Coppola's The Rain People (1969) and Getting Straight (1970).
Stein died from pancreatic cancer.
